This is Shirley Maxus. Maxus.

Now, I'll be the first to say I may've bitten off more than I could chew on this one. There was nothing technical about his character design, but when he was described to me, I really liked the concept of "so long as that he's wearing that hat, you'll never be able to see his eyes no matter which angle you look at him from."

I love that idea of character that you never see their eyes, or the very specific use of instances where shadows or the like hides ones eyes (Desperado is the first example to come to mind). It's a powerful tool.

Anyway, I wanted there to be some anticipation, or tension in the simplicity of this sketch. I wanted him to be tipping his hat up, but those shadows still obscure the viewers look into Maxus' eyes. In principle, I like it. And this sketch too, I like. But obviously, with where I wanted to put the focus, I couldn't get away with more than a slight, upper body outline.

Still, again, I like this piece.
