Very nice picture... however, what is that curling around his neck? Are those shoulder recoil plates?

Yes, they are. If you shoot with mortar which is attached to you it's good to have your neck protected. That kind thing gives quite strong kick ;)
Maybe I some day draw pic where that mortar is in action...
