I only really like it because I like the story and references the characters have. Plus, the animation brought back my inspiration to art and animate again :) . I'm sure other people have their own story about why, but mine is simply because:
1. Interesting and well designed characters
2. It is a very well animated video that was made by a small team (which takes a lot of time, dedication, and patience within such a small team of people
3. It told an interesting story that also was able to explain some backstory as well.
4. Good song
5. Because of all of this, people are able to draw their own conclusions and look for more. It's great for the audience because everyone can now draw certain theories about what exactly happened to the characters before and after. You can see developments between each character, but leave room for speculations and theories of what happened before and what could happen afterwards.
I think that's why people like it so much though, it gives the audience something to think about, rather than "oh yeah, cool video" and move on. The animation brought in something that people like to see as far as good well-thought out stories should go. It was a pretty well rounded animation and it even kept with the beat (which is the director/animators style) and it was pretty smooth from what tools he has used. Sure, bright colours are nice to look at, but what really drew the audience in even more is just how they referenced a lot of Scooby Doo (which is a pretty wide range of peoples childhood favourites) with a mix of new things on the character designs (like Skrillex, Gurren Laggan, Steven Universe, Gravity Falls, Phoenix Wright, etc.)
I followed his page and looked at all the things he's done to get up to this point as far as his animation goes. It's inspiring to me that he can creatively pull references from different things and yet still make original characters out of each, plus a concept that is very well known and easy to figure out at first glance.
I understand that people are quite confused about all the hype, but I think it's pretty cool in my opinion :3
