Hmmm.... well, to think of it, maybe such reputation might have to do with Korean gaming culture. Majority of Koreans consider that ultimate and only goal of gaming is to be most successful, gaining as many titles and blobbing as much as you can in the case of CK2, and thus people are focused on seeking formulas and equations that would bring such results. Of course, gaming culture in other countries would also have this aspect as well, but it seems that it is more pronounced in Korea. I can't recall having seen guides on playing CK2 that does not involve killing heirs, family members, and subjects on Korean sites.
I don't think that's unique to Korean culture... I too spent my first few games trying to be as successful as possible. The game is just so wide and complex that you're bound to lose most of the time, though, so might as well have fun while losing. What's fun also is how you can end up affecting the world just by going with the flow... in my favorite game, I started as a lowly count in Brittany, and ended as the undisputed king of... Poland. That was pretty cool. :3
King of Poland? That sounds quite interesting, though I don't think I'll be able to understand how that could work without playing the game. I definately would buy the game once I get back to Korea; I found it kind of pointless to buy one here as it takes about a week to download a game from steam due to poor internet connection.
I found it to be somewhat different from Total War series. I haven't played Hearts of Iron series yet, but since they are from same company, perhaps they are similar. I tried playing as Emirate of Granada several times, but most of those tried ended in ragequit; Castille, leading personal union with Aragon and (often)allied to France is simply impossible to beat, and the fact that Morocco often rivals you doesn't help much.
