It's an interesting little method. Basically his stomach is kinda like a atomizer, and breaks apart matter atom by atom. Scanning it's makeup as it does so, it basically creates an artificial profile of it and stores it in his memory. For the case of sentient critters, it reconstructs what's essentially an AI he can then insert into synthetic bodies. Or alternatively, he can keep them in his own little mental library, to access their knowledge when he needs it.
