As some Disney fans may remember, during the 1980s and early 1990s, Walt Disney Home Video first began releasing their famous animated films onto VHS (as well as Laserdisc and Betamax, to a lesser extent), with the home video market growing popular. Disney went all out on releasing them to video, putting them in plastic "clamshell" cases, going with full beautiful artwork on the cases, and setting up a special video line for them, the Walt Disney Classics collection. People sometimes refer to it as the "Black Diamond" collection because the case spines had a shiny black diamond logo with "THE CLASSICS" on it (an animated version also would appear before the film started.) For a number of the films, this was where they made their home video debut.
In fact, this year marks the 30th anniversary of when it started, when "Robin Hood" first came to home video in December 1984. This line lasted until fall 1994, when it was replaced with the "Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection," which lasted until 1999. Think of this "Classics" collection as the precursor to today's Platinum and Diamond editions.
I grew up with these VHS releases, so it makes sense why they're so special to me (mainly for nostalgic reasons.) Sometimes they can go for a lot of money nowadays! Only nine of these titles I currently have on DVD, and only two on Blu-Ray ("The Little Mermaid" and "Robin Hood," to be exact.)

Yup, I'm aware of that Rescuers scene. It does not show up on the Classics version of the VHS.
As for "The Little Mermaid," it actually wasn't recalled. One chain store did briefly pull it from the shelves, but it was only temporary. That "thing" on the cover was purely accidental, Disney and the cover artist revealed. Didn't stop it from being the best-selling video title of 1990!

Ah, yes I forgot. What I read actually was a poster on E-bay for the movie's re-release. I first saw Robin Hood on a recorded tape we had from the Disney Family movie or some name like that, I just know Michael Eisner introduced it with a costume charachter of Robin Hood.
