273 – The Land without Discernable Facial Features
Now it’s revealed what the Zwarte Piets really are! But, come on, you guys probably all already figured that one out. This seems to be a staple body horror trope of kids’ animation and it’s one that always gave me the willies when I was a young one. This is based in large part on The Care Bears in The Land Without Feelings, which was a really weird and upsetting cartoon if you see it as an impressionable youth. That cartoon was made in 1983, so it was just right in the last gasp days of that horrible 1970s nightmare aesthetic that swept through the animation industry for an entire decade and made every children’s flick into a traumatizing acid trip. I’M LOOKING AT YOU NELVANA.

Have you been keeping up with the protests against Zwarte Piet in The Netherlands? They want to ban them because they think its a racist stereotype not suitable to expose small children to. Next it will be Santa himself, for being a white stereotype... or maybe because it makes fun of obesity ... or elves. And let's not forget that Christmas is sinful because its an excuse to give useless present to each other while children starve in India and Africa. (Probably in Atlanta and Memphis, too.)
