I briefly mentioned these cuties in a journal a while back, but here's a couple previews to should the variations and visual traits they have. And here's a bit of info on them aswell~
There's two distinct "cape" types that vary in length and thickness, the butt cape, and the hood cape. The cape is actually a tendril/tail that is always flat tiped, and very wide. They use their "cape" for many important things, like balance, hunting, defense, and mating. For defense it's used in a way to mock and control it's opponent, much like a matador with a bull. They use it to hunt by distracting and blinding them withing, and them constricting their prey until it goes limp, though they will occasionally catch insects mid flight and eat them out of reflex, much like cats do. Their capes are used for mating and territorial disputes in the same way that a male peacock uses their tail for the same things, puffing it up and sticking it out to intimidate and grab attention, though Capes will also wiggle their "cape" around a bit during this act, aswell.

I guess maybe I watched too much Animal Planet and Nat Geo as a kid? Idk, whenever I come up with something I just immediately ask myself "WHY? Why do they even need these? Why would they develop and keep these features over centuries of evolution? Do you even want it to serve any functional purpose, or maybe it's a flaw?" If something doesn't have a reason for being there, I want to atleast state "and for some reason X species developed Y over years of breeding and mutation, and no one has ever found out why, as far as we know, it serves no purpose." I've just always been big on specifics and thinking everything out as much as possible. I find it a bit of a burden at times, but my bf says it's a gift for World Building, so I like to believe him instead~ n wn; lol
Well, whatever it is, it's a good way to think when it comes to this sort of thing! I have a whole world in my head and all the creatures and species in it have reasons for their odd little quirks and such, from cultural quirks to ones that occur naturally physically so I completely understand where you're coming from~ :3
