One of the most terrifying techs in the universe. Available only to the Chosen, Gravity drills push the very limits of the laws of physics to produce unfathomable amounts of energy and do brutish things to the fabric of space and time around them.
The drill bit of the gravity drill is coated in highly processed Unobtainium and spun to absurd RPM's within a gravity field until they begin to produce their own gravitation pull, the RPM continues to climb and the drill head is surged multiple times with anti-matter electrons until it produces a singularity of immense power. This singularity is then collapsed in on itself using the gravity field. The effect? The gravity drill bores into the space-time fabric itself. Boring through this place of existence and into the phased plane, joining them together at its tip. Using its conductive meshes and plates, it then extracts energy directly from the phased plane into the physical plane and into capacitors for the Chosen to use as they wish.
Whilst this is how the gravity drills operate, their sheer effect on reality around them give them many more uses. The main use is mining for unobtainium, the material used to produce Azuri's. This substance can ONLY be produced by anomalies (Which you can read more about here - http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5093488/ - go right to the very bottom section to read about anomolies) and is extremely difficult to find. Gravity drills however cause the area around them to become extremely unstable and increase the rate of anomalies spawning by over 160000%. Several gravity drills in the same area can cause anomalies to nearly constantly spawn. Whilst there is no actual way to make unobtainium spawn, the massive increase of anomalies simply means there is a higher chance of some being warped into existence. The Chosen run massive mining operations with several large scale gravity drills to mine of unobtainium the best they can, resulting in roughly 5kg of unobtainium being brought into existence every month.
In combat, Gravity drills can produce massive fields of gravitational torrents that can disrupt almost anything. And the vast amounts of energy they produce can be used to power even the most energy hungry of weapons and some of the Chosen's most dangerous weapons simply focus of projecting energy at people in the largest quantities possible. Assaulting a Chosen cruiser with a functional gravity drill is almost impossible.
The next use for the gravity drills the Chosen use commonly is their ability to burrow wormholes. The drills can open up stable wormholes allowing the Chosen to instantly teleport vast quantities of materials almost anyway in the universe. If there is another gravity drill at the destination, the wormhole can be set up within seconds and ready to go. If the destination doesn't have a gravity drill, then it can take several hours to calibrate the wormholes location correctly. Bringing the accuracy down to a single planet can take up to a day, calibrating down to the nearest meter can take up to a week, although this time can be reduced by dropped drones into the area and having them send back locator signals. This clever use of the gravity drills immense power is one of the biggest reasons why the Chosen are so badly feared. Although the other factions aren't aware of the gravity drills or how they work, they do know that the Chosen can seem to be almost anyway in very little time and this is how they do it.
Whilst they are extremely impressive and terrifying techs, gravity drills are difficult to stop once they're running. If a gravity drill was destroyed whilst still in operation, the effect would be catastrophic. Although its never been done, its thought that if even a small gravity drill mounted on a cruiser, like the one in the picture, were to be destroyed, it would easily take the whole solar system with it one of massive shockwave of cataclysmic power. The Chosen's very smallest gravity drills are no bigger than a mans torso, and they function is gateway openers for larger drills, but even if one of these were to be destroyed, it would still take an entire country out with its blast.
What perhaps is most terrifying about the gravity drills though, is the fact that theres no way to turn them off... every gravity drill brought into existence and activated can only be shut down forcible detonation, meaning that every drill is essentially a bomb waiting to go off, an ever growing syphon of energy that will continue to rip apart the fabric of space and time until it explodes, taking down a massive chunk of the physical realm with it when it does. Thankfully, the Chosens excellent design and management has meant that so far, no drills have been destroyed, but the threat of one doing so will always be there now.
With the thought in mind that even a gravity drill on a cruiser could wipe out a solar system with its death blast, the questions of "Whats the biggest drill in existence?" and "How much would it take out when it dies?" come to mind. And whilst i won't answer that question directly, what i can say, is that when those drills do finally die, you're going to see a big, big bang.
