Endless Realms bestiary - Dream Worm
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Another really fun creature concept - creatures from another realm, they are attracted to the dreams of sleepers, latching onto their hosts and feeding upon their minds, growing in intelligence until they are able to exert direct influence over their victim, using them as an extension of their will - perhaps history's greatest heroes and villains have actually been the work of dream worms!

I like the idea of it all depending on the individual, where one creature might be heroically good while another creature of the same species could be monstrously evil, just like humans. However, also like humans, the vast majority would be somewhere in between.
One thing about D&D that always bothered me was how there were "good" species and "evil" species, but I find it much more interesting when it always depends on the individual. With morally unique characters, it could also mean that the party could have read all the Endless Realms "monster manuals" and still not yet know whether this being they encounter is a friend or a foe, because no amount of knowledge of the species could tell you what to expect from the individual.

*nods* I didn't mind so much that many species have a "locked" alignment, but particularly for more intelligent or advanced species, it does make sense for them to be able to "break the mold" and be something else.
You may, then, be excited to hear that Endless Realms does not have alignments - instead, each character gets to have a set of virtues and vices.

No clue :b Sorry!
I thiiiink you can pick a few in the beginning during character creation, and perhaps as you accomplish things in the game, you are given additional ones? So maybe it's like reputation/infamy in The Elder Scrolls, where you have a running tally of "goodness" and "badness" throughout the game dependent entirely on what you actually do?

*chuckles* Yeah, it seems like a special kind of challenge just dealing with the thing - it's invisible in normal reality, so just knowing to look for it will probably be tough! Although, to be fair to the creature, it's not inherently evil, just parasitic in nature. Maybe depending on the individual worm, or depending on the nature of the host it's feeding off of, I'd like to think heroes are just as likely as evil maniacs :V
*chuckles* It seems there's always at least one player in a party who picks "chaotic neutral" if only so they can (erroneously) say, "Hey, it means I can do whatever I want whenever I feel like it!" when they really just want to play an atrociously evil character without calling themselves one :b
Yes, I know that feeling!
When I was in a D&D group quite some time ago, there was one guy who played an "unaligned" wizard, but although he called himself "unaligned," he was about as Chaotic Evil as the Joker from Batman or Missy from Doctor Who.
I came *this* close from demanding that he be forced out of our group, but the campaign came to an abrupt end anyway, mostly because it all was so chaotic due to including about 10 people at least.

*nods* The way my husband runs DnD is that, well, we can try to be a certain alignment, but there are things in the universe that simply Knows your alignment - heck, paladins come with Detect Evil, and Detect Alignment is a level 1 spell. Of course, your character might think they're perfectly acceptably neutral, or even good, but that doesn't change what you REALLY are in the universe's (DM's) eyes. If you act evil, you are Evil. If you act good, you are Good. Period. Players saying they're X or Y isn't worth much.
Also, wow, 10 people seems like a lot >_O

Yeah, I agree with you there, for sure. Doesn't Endless Realms' alignment system use some sort of "points" system, where you start at zero and go into positive numbers for doing good acts and negative numbers for evil ones?
And yes, 10 players was a lot, it got boring because it took so long to become any one player's turn again, and it didn't even last to level 2 because of that.
