KH: In your field, is there a consensus on what it means to be successful and who or what determines that success?
L: Well, I’m in human-centered computing which is a part of the computer-science field. The general consensus on being successful would be that you’re a professor or you publish a lot of research in academics. If you are in the field, that you’ve made a really successful game or movie. I don’t know who makes up the rules for the industry. It’s definitely public consumption that determines the success of the media that you make if you are in the industry.
KH: Who do you consider to be successful in your field and why do you consider them to be successful?
L: Ummm….
KH: Or is there certain types of people you consider to be successful? It doesn’t have to be specific names.
L: Okay… I consider the professors I work with successful. Here, they are showing me exactly what’s being done. We saw in Dr. Herro’s class she talked about Kurt Squire and James Gee a bit, both of them wrote textbooks I’ve studied in class. I would say that I think anyone successful in my field would be people who have reached the public – they know their names. Like Randy Pausch is a really famous professor. He wrote The Last Lecture. Have you heard of that?
KH: I have not.
L: Okay, yeah, well… He was really outstanding. It was a speech on how to reach your childhood dreams. And, he was dying of cancer and that’s why he gave it as his last lecture. And it was supposed to be for his children, but it reached everybody. You know? It was amazing, because it surpassed the field into everybody who could understand it.
KH: When will you know you are successful? Do you have something where you will think this is how I know I’ve made it?
L: My joke is, when I have a million dollars. [laughter] I have small patches of success. I have made a couple of games that people like. They’re small games, but I’ve made a couple of stories people like. When it’s something that I’ve put out with a message and people like that and people enjoy that. Umm, I guess I’m never satisfied. I’m always reaching out for the next thing, because that’s the type of person I am.
KH: So, from what you are saying your success seems to be determined what you value rather than other people. Do you think that’s true?
L: Umm, I’d say it’s 50/50. I basically consider my story-writing to be my calling in life. 50% is the message I want to get out and 50% is if the public is accepting of it.
KH: So do you think you can be success, or others can be successful without being a well-known name in your field?
L: I don’t think so. And the reason for that is because being well-known just comes with the success. If you’ve made impacting work people are going to want to know more about you. So if your work is well-known, it means that you are successful and that you will be too.
KH: Is your ultimate goal to go into academics or are you more so going out into your field, not necessarily for research, but you’re going out in your field for game-based learning or designing?
L: It’s definitely the latter. I’m going into my field, so I can learn more about game-based design. I could go out into my field now and design games now, but I feel like it wouldn’t have all the stuff that people learned about beforehand that I could really pack in there.
