Well, I personally have thought about the Cubi race as gender neutral ever since Dan took over Alexi's shop during her kidnapping. They only retain genders as they tend to be raised for 30 or so years as a certain gender in a 2-gendered society before gaining their shape shifting abilities. Therefore, a Cubi only retain their genders due to psychological preferences. This is probably part of the reason they Cubi refer to themselves as a race with a gender-neutral name and refer to individuals as a part of the collective race with a gender modifier (In- and Suc-).

I'm probably way over thinking this. Also, gender-confused Cubi have it easy once they go through their "second puberty".

Well, according to Amber her cubi cannot change completely, they can't modify their reproductive system so that it becomes fully functional as the opposite gender.
So no, they can't change their gender. Also there's more than boobs and balls to it ;p

Still, I stand by what I said about gender-confused Cubi having it easy, and I'm sure that there are potions and spells in the DMFA universe that would allow a complete change to be completed.

Which kinda brings to mind what people do IRL, a gender change, whatever you do, is never complete. You will always stay your original gender because you can't change your genetic code, it doesn't matter how many surgeries you had or how many pills you're taking.
