my first review I have been working on for a couple of days
Hi I'm Fido, and welcome to the very first episode of Fidos media reviews where i review movies,video games,tv shows,and internet cartoons comics and anime and give my good points and bad points about them
these can be from anywhere either America, Canada, Europe,and even Japan. from cult classics,old-school,imports,and even new school stuff.
for our first episode, we take a trip to Hungarian animation, where a animated movie takes the idea of a battle between cat and mouse and sets it to a comedic parody espionage action film theme with cartoon-like physics and the name of that film: Macskafogo or Cat City in english. directed by Bela Ternovszky and written by Jozsef Nepp. this 1986 Hungarian film parodies plenty of action flicks and spy film tropes like say the James bond films. back dropped in a cartoon anthro like universe.
Cat City was the english title that was used in the United States distribution on VHS by Sefel Pictures in 1987 however the true english title translation to Macskafogo is really Cat Catcher or Cat Trap.
the film opens to a cliche Star Wars style text scroll prologue explaining the main situation of the struggle that goes on in the of year 80 AM Anno Mickey Mouse. where the mice on planet x are locked in a struggle between a gang of cats that are hellbent on destroying them and ignoring the old conventions between mice and cats. then, the scene fades into a city skylight of metropolis showing the opening title. obviously, telling us that it's not a sci-fi movie.
what starts out was a typically normal bank scene with guards at the door. and the manager claiming the bank to be heist-proof when suddenly, a big armored tank burst in,kills the manager,clean the bank of its money and gold,and flattens the arriving police van to a cartoonish cardboard fashion as it leaves.
then we meet the man (or cat) of the operation, Mr. Fritz Teufel, the eye-patched villain who rules with a metallic fist with sharp claws and he hates mice with an super extreme passion as much as any cat in this movie. so, Fritz was checking in on the progress of the robbery and other operations.with his Smithers like right-hand in command. Safranek. he tells him the heist was a half success. the only thing that they could not get was cheese. hows that you might ask? the common problem is that the cheese is stored mouse holes in walls. so yeah cats can't get the cheese if they can't fit through the mouseholes. Safranek has a breakthrough special solution to this problem is to shrink an operative so they will be able to get into the mouseholes. one flaw is the cat would be weak and easy to beat up by a mouse thats the same size as him. so Safraneks plan fails and he gets the cat scratch penalty of his boss. that penalty kind of plays out as a running gag throughout the movie
meanwhile, on a skyscraper. a intermouse agent codename 4-14. disguised as a window washers boards a helicopter. and is on his way to a meeting to give his report on secret plans being developed by the intermouse labs in the far east of Pokyo and one of the members suggest its needs a special agent brave enough to pick em up,
their candidate for this: retired agent Nick Grabowski. Fritz eavesdrop on this meeting via CCTV and tells Safranek to track down information about Grabowski then informs his even more badder boss, Mr. Giovanni Gatto, who immediately scolds Fritz to not waste his time and do his job. sometimes i feel bad for Fritz and Safranek for this
Fritz, is unlucky Safranek, is just a klutz. then, we meet Safranek's daughter Cathy, a young kitten who seems to be the only one in this film to be friendly with mice and as you sadly might have guessed. Safranek is against this. so she keeps it a secret from her dad. but, unfortunately, not the most developed character and has little screen time.
then, we finally meet the main hero Grabowski, who lives in a cabin alone. is met by the professor from the meeting who tries to bring to him back to the surface. they are unaware that their conversation is being eavesdropped yet again by the cats. but Grabowski quickly took care of it.
and so Grabowski agrees to takes this task and comes up with a plan using the intermouse band bugle player as a decoy while he takes a different route, but of course, Fritz caught on to his plan and has counter-plan of his own: send a group to follow him. a cat name Nero sends him a group of specialist's rats that has its own trippy music video known as the 4 gangsters
Buddy, Billy, Prissy, and Pukie a group of former circus performers turned gangsters tasked to pursue Grabowski in their madmax style car. but due to their dysfunctional group dynamics. resulting from one slapstick goof up to another wrecking their car. but also Grabowski knowing about them pursuing him all along. he seems to be very good at expecting the unexpected.
Elsewhere, the intermouse bugle boy Lusta Dick. head for the far east by airline. only to find out that its being hijacked by cats. but then, an undercover intermouse agent takes on the hijackers resulting a shootout. only for the pilot to be shot by one of the hijackers bullets and crashes the plane into a deep dark jungle leaving Lusta as the only survivor.
he then ventures out through the land to seek help. facing danger and peril at every turn. he seems to be the most unlucky character then Safranek. he almost got eaten by a plant but escapes then he decides to take the river by leaf boat. finding out it only leads to waterfall he tries to save himself by playing his trumpet but gives up when runs out of tunes to play and goes down with his boat.
the 4 gangsters after a little setback, gets back on the trail of Grabowski. but they find out he abandons his car and boards a cargo ship. Fritz gets a call from his boss Gatto saying he's throwing a party and likes him to be there with the plans or else he will have his head mounted to the wall like the others that failed him. this made Fritz uneasy and more desperate to get those plans to save his fur.
On the ship, Grabowski finds out that the cargo on board contains yarn. the string that cats like play with for hours which cat pirates in a submarine plan to hijack.and the captain rather gives up the ship for his and crew lives then retaliate.so they locked Grabowski in his cabin so he doesn't cause trouble and then abandon ship giving the pirates control.
but the outnumbered,outgunned, and resourceful Grabowski fightback against the pirates on board, frees the ship from the tow rope,sets the ship in autopilot, and jumps overboard as it rams the pirates submarine to a watery grave. hours later Grabowski tired out still drifts out to sea and thousand miles away from his destination but then he spots the 4 gangsters above him still looking for him by seaplane. Buddy, completely unaware of Grabowski's presence below throws out a bottle. and Grabowski' uses it as a makeshift boat using his tail a motor.
back in the jungle with Lusta. who survived the waterfall and escapes a crocodile. decides to rest up in the tree. later at night, he was snatched by a bat bandit named Pedro and brought to a temple where other bat bandits and their leader Maxipocak lives. Lusta befriends the musical trigger happy bandits after showing off his trumpet skills. sparing him from getting his blood sucked.
Grabowski, finally reached his location in Pokyo and enters the intermouse lab. he finds out the place has been ransacked. with the Professor Fushimisi and his assistant Csino-san tied up. telling him of the desperate four rats that were pursuing him, breaking in and thrashing the place looking for the plans. then Grabowski knew that plans were on microfilm and was hidden in Fushimisi's beard and decides to use his photographic memory to make a copy of the plans.
then, the 4 gangsters burst in and ambush Grabowski so he fought em off. then he,Fushimisi, and Csino-san goes up to the rooftops due to cats now storming the building. the troublesome four meets up again with the trio and shot Grabowski. sending him falling to his death. OR so they thought. as the gangsters went back down to the street find his body for the microfilm. Grabowski tricks them yet again. having decided that going back down to the street was no option for them. the resourceful trio makes a hang glider. but Fushimisi insists that they leave him behind. so, Grabowski and
Csino-san soars through the city escaping both the cats and the 4 gangsters. to board an intermouse plane.
the next day in Fritz's office. he gets a phone call from Gatto again reminding him to be at his party tonight not only with the plans but now with the capturing of Grabowski. then he plans out the raid at the airport and leaves Safranek to coordinate the squads that are set up throughout the city for the attack and the missiles that are set to shoot down the plane.
but the intermouse agents, 4-14, and the professor have their counterplans setup too, lead a diversion and have an armored squad keep the cats busy. now both sides have they aces played out on the table so its war. as the escorted plane approaches. the cats fire the 3 missiles. the jets distracts the other 2 while the first takes out the plane's 3rd engine, Grabowski and
Csino-san jumps out of the plane as the last two missiles both get tied up in a knot and crashes against each other causing a cloud to temporary rain. both Grabowski and Csino-san lands safely in a secret location. so the professor and agent 4-14 put their diversion plan to effect as daring gun battle ensues between both sides. bullets and rockets flying with visual cartoon physic being applied.
while this was happening outside. Grabowski and his friend were taking a tunnel to the intermouse HQ. but the fiendish feline Fritz was waiting him as he sabotages the escape route and sends Grabowski and Csino-san crashing against the wall. but that didn't stop him from throwing a few blows at Fritz which made him lose his fanged teeth. Csino-san climbs on top of Fritz removing his eyepatch. which reveals a ruby in his left eye which truly frightens her.
but Fritz manages to captures them both taking them prisoners. at Gatto's party, Fritz presents Grabowski, Csino-san, and the plans to his boss so he can destroy it and toast a victory speech that the cats have won for good. but that was cut short when Lusta and the bat bandits launch an aerial attack on the party, rescuing both Grabowski and Csino-san from the cats clutches.
so Grabowski using his memory recreates the plans on a blueprint and saves the day. so the engineers finally creates the secret weapon which is revealed to be a robotic dog named Cat Catcher chases down the cats capturing them,disarming them of their weapons,draining their both evil and hate, then sends them through the back now as good friendly harmless cats that will get along with mice and will never harm them again.
that was Macskafogo. and in my opinion it was a great animated movie. despite a few Hungarian style humor and puns did get lost in translation in the the english dub. its still worth watching. the style of this movie does remind me a little of Ralph Bakshi animated movies without the rotoscoping live footage or satire focus. but instead it parodies a trope of spy, action, adventure,and gangster films

the battles throughout the film.
Grabowski expecting the unexpected.
the humorous mishaps of the 4 gangsters.
I like the idea of an animated action movie that uses visual gags and cartoon physics the other animated action movies try to avoid.
*Bad things in the movie:
the Cats relentless hostility towards mice.
Gattos breathing down Fritz neck.
Safranek's daughter Cathy having very little character development in the movie.
loss of Hungarian puns and meanings in the english dub that some Hungarian audiences might be disappointed with.

Overall, Macskafogo is a very clever animated movie. with a mix of both action and comedy and I totally like it. I give it a 5 out of 10. I'm fido. giving you entertaining content for your pressure and this has been Fidos media reviews
