In the version of the story I had then, those fighters were meant to find and bring him back in a friendly way, but they didn't expect to find him climbing down the nearby cliffs... And when they do, he mistakes their intentions, slips and hurts himself by hitting a rock during a fall...
I changed the story since, but well, that doesn't mean I've gone smoother on him
