Princess Luna's first days in Canterlot seemed as cold and lonely as her millenium in exile. Yes, the nightmare and its dark powers were gone, and she had been reconciled to her sister, but she was still weak and disoriented by a thousand years of change, not to mention bearing a load of guilt and shame no creature, let alone an immortal, should ever have to bear.
The Canterlot Guard seemed to be of no help to her. Most stayed aloof from Luna or her problems, doing enough to prove their loyalty but nothing more. A few shied back from her as if she were still Nightmare Moon. A few others even gave the cold glares marking them with an unforgiving heart. There seemed to not be a friend among any of them, much to her great dismay.
Into this cold darkness one night HE came - a white unicorn stallion with bright blue eyes and a surprisingly casual demeanor for a guard, everything about him seeming to gleam brighter from the courage and kindness he exhibited in everything he said and did. He did not seem to think of her as the monster she had once been or even the princess she was now, but as a lonely mare in desperate need of friendship - and maybe a hug or two. And it was a most wonderfully amazing thing to her.
The guard stayed up the night with Luna, but left without giving his name or taking off his helmet. This caused Luna's curiosity to burn within her to such an extent she did not delay telling of her sister of the events and asking who her anonymous benefactor might be.
Older sister Princess Celestia, after hearing of the events, gave her younger sister a kind smile and began explaining that she did not need to guess - she KNEW who it was, and why he'd done it. And what Celestia had to tell of the Good Samaritan's identity astounded the younger sister.
Shining Armor, beloved of a princess, talented and loyal officer of the Royal Guard, one of Celestia's closest confidants and, not least of all, the very blood brother of Twilight Sparkle - he was the one beside Luna that night offering friendship and kindness fearlessly. Needless to say, Luna was left both astonished and overjoyed a stallion as wonderful as he was willing to give his help to somepony who had sinned as greatly against Equestria as she had.
Luna would one day call this stallion 'Captain' and 'Prince' and even 'family', but before all those things happened she first called him 'friend'. And it started with an anonymous visitation - not for hope of gain or recognition, but simply because she needed a friend in this very dark period of her life. Celestia later called it 'the magic of friendship in its most noble and sublime form', and it was hard for anypony to argue otherwise...
