I think it's a helpful little fun thing to do to show how much you've accomplished and how much you've improved. It's worth the time and dickin' around in Photoshop.

Oh, I love seeing these! Out of curiosity, what do you think has been your greatest area of growth this year? All of your stuff just looks so good to me, but it does seem that perhaps you got a bit bolder with interesting lighting as the year went by!

I'll definitely be doing one of these, too... just as soon as I create something in December that I'm proud of.

I would have to agree with you that the main thing I improved on was probably lighting/shading. I DID do some background work with things I'm not entirely comfortable with such as buildings/architecture in general and just overall weird environmental lighting, but I hope to be braver with those topics in this upcoming year.
