[OLD/ABANDONED] Rocky - Jock Sock Shock
UNFINISHED PROJECT - ABANDONED APRIL 2010
Having previously tormented Mike with his bare feet, Rocky proves to his shrunken playmate that he doesn't need to remove his socks in order to have his fun.
Anyone who has seen either of the Great Unfinished Collections in my scraps (Vol I and Vol II) will know that I always have a lot of works in progress which I am yet to complete. This is the second of three abandoned pieces of artwork which I have now decided to upload in their unfinished states as I no longer plan on finishing them in their current forms.
This piece has been untouched since April 2010, and represents Panel 4 in the first volume of my collection. From the start I knew there was something wrong with the way I had drawn Rocky's face, which annoyed me enormously. I also increasingly came to wish that I had drawn the socked foot differently, and as more and more time passed, I came to spot a number of perspective issues which just made the whole piece look really disjointed and weird to me.
Suffice it to say, the only way to resolve all these issues would've been to draw it again almost entirely from scratch, and I never mustered up sufficient enthusiasm to do so. Even if I had been prepared to overlook these problems, I would have encountered further trouble with the shading. This picture was created back in the days when I used to do a lot of my shading on the same layer as the drawing - a method which I have long since abandoned in favour of the more flexible multi-layer approach - and it seemed too much hassle to fix for a drawing that I didn't like anyway.
However, the idea is one that I would like to explore again at some stage. With any luck, there may be a completely new version of this to come from me in the future.

Well, abandoned and adorned with issues as it may be, I do love the premise of it! Even in socks, you can see that Rocky's feet have such nice shape and definition to them. I would love to see a new version of this one, particularly with all the new and much-improved techniques you've learned. :)
I've never been too keen on doing it - at least not for pieces that I intend to finish at some stage, because I feel it detracts from the impact of seeing the final piece as a new concept - but I got sick of having these in my 'unfinished' pile when I clearly had no intention of finishing them anymore. So I thought I might as well upload them anyway. It was that, or they'd never see the light of day.
Pretty hectic at the moment, to be honest. Since September I've been largely working on an unfinished comic that is almost as old as these abandoned pieces, though it's taking forever to get completed and I haven't been putting much energy into any other pieces. Got a lot of RL stuff going on of late as well so not had much time for art overall, hence the lack of uploads from me in the second half of this year.
I'll probably go into more detail in a journal entry sometime before the end of the year. Been a bit of an annoying 12 months for me, to be honest.

Folks are welcome to draw any of my characters they wish. I quite enjoy it! All I request is that if/when you upload the piece, just credit the character appropriately (e.g. Mike belongs to
riproarrex - or a link to some of my original work of the character)

I can respect if you don't like how this turned out, and considered Cornered to have a fair big of issues too, but I still enjoy every single piece involving a Rocky and a micro Mike.
And I'm not sure if I've told you before, but I'm also usually tempted to ponder story ideas involving the way you portray Rexar and Mike together, and these pieces involving Rocky; typically involving a surprise shrinking and abduction by Rocky, then the inevitable rescue by a very angry Rexar. And perhaps a few scenes of Rexar and a tiny Mike experimenting carefully while they look for a way to reverse the shrinking or wait for it to wear off. X3

Heh - no, I don't think you've ever told me that before. But then I dare say lots of folks are often doing the same thing with my artwork. Pictures don't have to be taken at face value, they can be visual prompts for storylines unique to each viewer's imagination.
Cornered did have a lot of issues, but then that was a 2008 piece of artwork - far older even than this unfinished piece - and these days I struggle to look at anything I did before 2011/12 without finding considerable fault. Even some of my 2012 stuff is annoying me now.

Sorry for the late reply, was pretty much afk here most of December. Anyways, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised if I'm not the first to get ideas from your artwork, but it's a bit more than that. I've been reading your little storyline with Rexar and Mike, and it's pretty clear what's going on in your separate universe thing with Mike and Rocky. Well...now that I think about it's vaguely possibly Rocky's real interest is different than what he's projecting. But assuming it isn't and he's just a bastard of an alpha canine it's not...too hard to think of ways to make your romantic storyline and Rocky's usual antics involving an unwitting and unwilling Mike intersect. I daresay your latest post in the ongoing storyline has me thinking about realistic hesitation and it's properties in enhancing buildup again. It's not like I didn't use it myself in my own little story a couple years ago...but still. Roleplay has unfortunately devalued the art of slower, deeper pacing more than it's helped me practice it, sadly.
I occasionally have thoughts about Rocky and Mike, and whether Rocky's denying something about himself. But I don't really explore it much in the artwork because I think A.) It would confuse a hell of a lot of people who have trouble separating the realities in which my characters exist, and B.) I don't really consider Rocky to be a particularly deep or attractive character. But as always, I allow people to see what they want to see.
*nods* It's very clear which character of yours you really have a thing for. ;3 Rocky is almost just a way to express non-consensual, fetishy desires that you don't want to put on Rexar when you've come to think of him as an ideal mate and not the aggressively dominant dino he seemed to be a few years ago, right?
This is coming absurdly late, but I understand, I think. A story I started a couple years ago involved a jock type, but I can't imagine making him the asshole type, because the character I relate to just cannot end up with someone I would never date in real life. Would take all the fun out of writing anymore chapters...if I ever get back to it. X3
