More pony art! With Service to the Crown Day come up in my Equestria dreamscape here are some examples of armor that I observed ponies wearing on that day.
The earth pony mare on the left was an officer assigned to one of the Alpine specialist forces that patrol the Northern borders of Equestria. The waterproof padded armor has layer of chainmail sandwiched between the layers of padding. On her front legs are sheathed blades designed to slash when she swings her front legs in combat.
The earth pony stallion wearing the Sallet-style helmet was from one the heavy field artillery units. Artillery ponies technically have full armor they can wear, but often it get left behind in the barracks due to its weight. Only under extreme circumstances will some units remove their signature Kepi caps and grudgingly put on the helmets.
The unicorn stallion is wearing a standard medium field armor kit, it is a style of armor worn by not just unicorns but by earth ponies and pegasi to; although the pegasi variant is altered to allow for their wings and if an earth pony is wearing the kit a special plate is installed to cover the hole in the helmet.

Oh yes! Don't forget Cpl. Stone. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/9239874/
Very nice work!!! Both went straight to the Favorites folder!
I like the helmet on the right, looks Roman.
I wonder about the wings of the pegasi. They would want some protection, but the wings still need to be able to function (hmm...booster rockets?). Or perhaps this is where the enchantments come in...

I imagine that in my canon, Royal Corps of Engineer ponies wear armor similar to the alpine spec ops pony on the left. The armor is basically to ensure the Corps ponies don't get injured from enemy action while doing field work, though they're probably some of the older and more beat up specimens handed down by the Guard. Penwright had to wear such a suit when he was deployed a bit close to one of Equestria's borders, though for the most part he didn't wear the armor as he stayed in the fort practically the entire time.
I suspect that the there is a group of ponies that we have not seen yet. Full on draft horses, even larger than Big Mac, (whom I take to be a Morgan) things like the Clydesdales, Shires, Belgians and Gypsy Vanners. might wear more extensive and heavier barding. we probably won't see them either, but season 5 could have many surprises in store for us...
Chain mail or Scale mail?
Scale mail looks impeccably nice on ponies.
But so far, as the argument goes...
Scale mail is more expensive to manufacture and supposedly weighs more than Chain mail.
Whereas Scale mail can supposedly protect against bodkin-point arrows and thin stabbing weapons that would otherwise bypass and defeat Chain mail.
