The Kindness of Christmas by NightlySnow
Bicker kept running in a straight line, constantly glancing back. The gray hellhound with black spots was now on the run after running away from Hell. She knew Hell would be sending demons to capture her and bring her back, or perhaps worse.
Snow sightly fell as she dodged in between trees. Her heighten senses told her she was safe and could take a break, but she didn't dare take a breather. The snow started to stick to her horns, her back becoming wet from the snow. She was so cold, a temperature she was definitely not use to.
As night fell, she spotted lights in the distance. “A town?” She breathlessly whispered to herself. “Why are they awake at this time of night?” Despite her legs hounding at her to stop, she pressed on; Hoping she could find a barn to sleep in.
Within an hour, she exited the forest, and arrived at the edge of town. The snow was a good two feet deep now, and her fuel gauge was beyond empty. She slowed her pace, almost walking like a zombie, to enter town. The town was quiet, no one was out. Her eyes widen as she looked around.
Each house and business had colored lights on them, decorated in different ways. Plastic candy canes, a man in a red suit, and what looked to be cardboard reindeer were scattered about. The town was really small, maybe some kind of farming community. But, she didn't understand why this town was so bright.
She got a peaceful feeling as she edged to the center of town, a fountain frozen in time. The colored lights danced on the ice, creating beautiful pictures on the snow that surrounded it. Right beside this amazing fountain, was a big red sleigh, empty except for a big golden rucksack, and didn't look like it had been used as transport.
Bicker's muzzle dropped as she looked at the sleigh, her white paw slowly rubbing against the side as she walked around. It was cold to the touch, made of some kind of metal. She felt like she was in a dream.
A cold gust of wind hit her backside, reminding her of the cold temperature. Exhaustion hit her hard and she knew she couldn't go one more step. She crouched down, sliding under the sled. It may not have blocked the wind, but at least it stopped the snow from falling on her back. Bicker circled three times, like a dog, before lying down and wrapping her tail around her face. Her eyes shut instantly, blackness taking over her sight.
“Hello?” came a squeak. The hellhound's eye lids snapped opening, thinking the worst. She jumped to her feet, just to slam her head on the bottom of the sled and sending her crashing to the ground. When her eyes focused and saw what made the sound, she was surprised.
The sun had just came up and a small human in a pink dress and a big red coat, not even 6 years old, stood in front of her. Her green gloves held, a coffee mug and some kind of box that was wrapped. Bicker just stared, fright in her eyes. She had flashbacks from her last mission, and huge dread coming over her heart. Is this a trick? Am I being set up? Her mind was racing and she didn't know if she had the strength to fight hell's best 'Valkyries'.
The small child just stared at the frighten creature with a big cheesy smile on her face. “Merry Christmas.” She happily spoke, setting down the mug and colored box by her feet. “Santa told me a good hearted hound by his sleigh needed some love and asked me to give you this.” She took a few steps back, before turning around and running down the street.
The hellhound stared at the mug and box, unsure of what to make of it. “Merry Christmas? Santa? What was that human speaking of?” She slowly inched out, sniffing the mug. It seemed to be some sort of hot liquid that smelled of chocolate and milk. She slowly lowered her head, her tongue entering the liquid. Her tongue shot back in surprise. “HOT!” She yelped, just to lick her lips and enjoy the sweet taste.
She took a paw of snow, putting it in the drink. She lapped it up quickly, enjoying the warm it brought to her tummy. Bicker let out a satisfied sigh, almost forgetting about the colored box. She took out her index finger claw, and slowly ripped an opening into the wrapper.
The wrapper fell aside, revealing a bunch of different cookies, the same colors as the town. She sniffed it, her tummy growling. She ate them all in one bite, not even bothering to chew. She looked up to realize she was no longer alone. The town was awake and alive, coming into the streets. Some were singing while others chatted and exchanged gifts.
They were slowly walking towards her and she froze in fear. She stared at the townspeople as they entered the fountain area, smiles and laughter on each one of their faces. They soon noticed they weren't alone and became quiet, staring at the hellhound. She saw the little girl that had been so kind, running to the her.
“Honey, no!” Came an older female voice from the crowd, but the young child didn't listen. She stopped in front of Bicker, her hand held out. The hellhound hesitated at first, feeling the stress starting to rise from the older humans. She took a step forward, placing her chin on the small child's green glove. The girl started to giggle as she scratched the hound's chin which made Bicker wag her tail, something she had never done before.
The stress instantly disappeared and the laughter and good times continued. Many approached Bicker, softly petting her and handing her cookies to eat. For the first time since Bicker escaped, she felt happy and above all safe. Before, she thought all humans were scum, but now, she knew everything she was told was nothing but lies.

I drew this little piece up as a fan art piece for the story written for me above. I tried to make it a quick paintypiece and it shows, but I still like how it turned out. I still spent quite a bit of time on it, don't get me wrong. I just couldn't spend as much time on it as I could/should have. Its not good to do that I know, I shouldn't be submitting half-ass art. But here it is anyways
Besides my art, I really really enjoyed the story I received. NightlySnow did a great job in a short story. Im so grateful.
Merry Christmas! <3
