Again.. another drawing I had no plans on doing. I just ended up with more time on my hands than I thought... so a random idea ensued.

I had some downtime between things today so I decided to make myself useful and draw some. It was done between 1PM and 1:30 AM. The character belongs to one of my favorite artists on this site, Savvanahhorrocks.

I recorded this to show my spazzy process when doing composition studies. The chopping wasn't so much an anatomy issue as it was design and flow. As it is now it looks off balance due to the lack of tail. I can't believe it slipped my mind. And yes... I constantly flip the image and invert the colours just to make sure everything stays balanced. It's very inefficient.
I will record the CG as well as the post stuff.... and I may record how I do lineart again just for kicks. But I don't want this to be a lineart/colourwithinthelines type piece. I want to try a more crazybrushy approach on this one. Being in experimental mode... it might not end well as far as recording goes. I predict a lot of trial and error.
Also... hands. Always having trouble with hands =(

It's to make sure it's balanced. Where when a human is roughly symmetrical (roughly.), so should what you're drawing be. If you flip the image a lot while drawing it, it begins to look more believable facing left, and facing right. When some images are flipped, they can seem very awkward or off balance. It really does help, as sometimes I flip my images and go "Wow, that leg is so off.." or whatever.
Man, I always love seeing how others work. Your methodology seems like TVPaint would be right up your alley for sketching; have you ever tried it?
This is just a thought, but have you ever made a mask of the character so that you don't have to spend so much time cleaning up via erasing by hand?

The particular song I used was "1-04 - Grand Nord L'Ocean"
And although looks a lantern, it's actually a censer. Though it may as well be one... the only difference between the two things is that a censer intentionally blows smoke when its burned.

Does flipping the canvas also help drawing curves that aren't easy without having to "rotate" the image... for insance a right hand can draw a curve ( <--- like that easyer than ) <--- that? I've drew for years on paper and have become to used to rotating the paper to draw lines and curves easyer but with a tablet you can't easily rotate the image, so am I right in guessing that flipping the image helps with this too?
It helps... but not as much as Painter's or OC's manual rotation thing. PS only flips in 90 degrees at most... which is not that great. I am right handed and the strokes that are the strongest for me to control are right to left and up to down. As I would on paper... I'd need to be able to rotate arbitrarily to get the full use out of my stroking. Although I can work through most of it, when inking... it becomes a problem, forcing me to use the pen tool for more precise stroking in areas I am the weakest in.
But the main reason I flip is to keep the drawing visually balanced. It's the same reason why for a time I had drawn a line straight through the character.

Yep. Here is one of her reference sheets from Savannahhorrocks.

I love the lantern she is carrying, her expression, her pose, the way you did her talons and wings and cute bloomers... AUGH!
I can't get over this. Kaz was right. I'm just flipping out with joy over here ;_____________; seriously. OMG.

I really love this piece. Thank you very much for putting up the video. It was very nice to see how you work. You were using some really interesting tool's I've never seen before. I do wonder how you utilize redmask and that strange tool you used to make the long stem of the lantern. Very cool pose! Very nice to see her in a different style =)
