I have A buttload of short stories set in EC, and since we're in Veiled right now I decided to post an origin story. The story consists of two characters called Rin and Minnow - or now known as Elder and Falcon (Raven's grandfather), as they plan on fighting a dragon to obtain the valley that will become the Veiled Forest Village where the first half of the first book takes place.
Elemental Chronicles OVA - 10. Veiled paradise
The young blue wolf kept low on the ground with his belly touching the soil and tail flat on the grass with eyes set on his target that stood grazing between the trees of the forest. His limber legs ached; he stalked the deer for a while now. The deer, who knew of his presence earlier, seemed to have forgotten the threat it was exposed to and it dropped its guard fully. The wolf closed his eyes and strained his eyelids and as he opened them a sphere of water rippled in front of him and he directed it over his head with a shift of his muzzle. He stretched forward his left arm and the water stretched out and formed an arrow. The wolf jumped up and into the air and applied force behind the arrow which made it shoot forward, splashing away and keeping its form. The deer’s head shot up alarmed when the wolf jumped up from what seemed like oblivion in his sight and pounced off. The arrow struck it in its shoulder and it stumbled forward and nearly tripped but it persevered forward. The blue wolf growled under his breath and chased after it. Above him a shadow jumped from tree to tree, sending an occasional twig to fall on his face. The deer ran with all its might but eventually slowed its pace as it was losing blood. The shadow figure swooped down from the trees and bit directly onto the deer’s neck and pushed it over to the ground from the velocity of the fall. The blue wolf locked his jaw on the deer’s throat a second later and crushed its windpipe in an instant, granting their prey an immediate death, free of further pain.
The golden brown wolf closed the deer’s eyes with his paw and whispered a prayer in old language, releasing its spirit to reincarnate into nature again.
“Your arrows are losing their precision my friend” the golden wolf said as he stood tall over the deer, he looked young and strong. Both of them were in their prime.
“The deer’s expression made me hesitate for a second. I saw the glimmer of death in its eyes; it knew it was its time…”
“You released it to continue to the next cycle. And now we will have the energy to continue ours, it blessed us with its carnal shell to eat”
“The balance of nature” the blue wolf smiled.
They each took an end of the deer and dragged it through the forest. As night dawned on them the forest started to come alive. The songs of birds quickly turned into to hymns of cicadas, the atmosphere shifted and the nocturnal took dominion. And the yips and low growls of the tainted filled the air. They started to smell the blood and followed the crimson trail the deer left as the two rangers dragged it. The golden wolf stopped and released the leg of the deer.
“We don’t have much time, Minnow. I can sense them approaching faster with each heartbeat. They are hot on our trail”
The blue wolf – Minnow, contemplated for a second.
“Do you know how many there are?”
“No. the blood is overpowering my senses” the golden wolf replied.
“Let us avoid any further bloodshed” Minnow said, the wolf nodded in concord and bit into the leg again and tried to yank it off. Minnow pressed his paw in the blood wound on the deer’s throat and then lingered his paw over its thigh. In a quick motion he formed a paper-thin crimson guillotine and hit the thigh pressing down. The guillotine sliced clean through the thigh and released the leg and a large chunk of clean cut meat above it.
“Run in front of me, Rin. I will cover you from behind” he ordered the golden wolf. He nodded and dragged the leg along. Minnow stood still for a second and smelled the crisp night air, trying to get a scent. But his sense of smell was obstructed by the potent stench of blood. He turned around and gave one last look behind him and he darted off behind Rin. He heard savage growls and tearing of flesh and fighting for meat behind him but he didn’t look back. He caught up to Rin and grabbed the other side of the leg and they picked up their pace. Minnows mind was disoriented and split two ways as he feared being followed and turning into prey and also the succulent meat between his canines which made his mouth water. His tongue was greedily lapping up the blood while they ran. Rin smiled with the dry hoofed-leg side and rolled his eyes. They got to their cave and dropped the leg inside. Rin drew a rune like pattern on the ground and stomped his paw down onto it and the vines on the walls stretch to opposite sides and closed the entrance. He gave a large yawn and stretched his legs.
“I’m exhausted” he yawned. Minnow laughed and fell flat on his stomach as he panted happily and out of breath.
“Let’s go before we get to comfortable here. They might smell our meal” Minnow said and pushed up his body that seemed to be held down to the ground by his fatigue. He picked up the limb again and waited for Rin to pass him. As Rin walked, the flowers and vines on the walls lit up in a radiant cobalt blue light which illuminated their way. The light faded out as they got further away from it. They walked deeper and deeper into the damp caverns until they finally got to their den site.
The vines stretched out on the cavern floor in an intricate pattern and it pulsed slowly – the light would fade slightly after a few seconds and then light up again, like a slow beating heart. Ever since Minnow first encountered it he was awed by its radiance each time he saw the marvelous species of fauna. Rin told him once he encountered the spectacular fauna for the first time in a cave by an abandoned beach in the earth country – a place far away from the water kingdom where they were. When he saw it he had to absorb its knowledge, thus he can create the species at whim. Even though that journey’s main goal was a failure.
“Let’s eat, my friend. We deserve this succulent meal” before Rin could even finish his sentence; Minnow was already tearing away at the raw flesh. Rin laughed and indulged in the meat as well, filling up his hollow belly. They were foolishly trying to see who could survive the longest without meat, and it was equally hard for them both, even through Rin grew fruit, berries and vegetables for them. It was a test of endurance, a test that they both failed and agreed would be a draw. Five weeks with no meat was their limit and they were losing weight at an alarming rate.
“Can you believe some firewolves prefer their meat to be cooked? I mean, why would you deprive yourself of the goodness of bloody raw meat…” Minnow mumbled as he chewed. Rin coughed a laugh and swallowed.
“Fire comes way too easily to them, as expected. They think they are more dignified eating cooked meat. Though I bet they don’t even like it” he chuckled.
“Pretentious. We should indulge in our feral instincts. And mine tells me I should tear this meat into pieces” He growled and ripped off a large chunk.
Rin laughed and continued sharing the meal with his friend. He looked at Minnow and remembered how he thought how pretentious he was when he first met him. When he and Minnow crossed paths for the first time in an unfortunate event – He was a cold sod with a huge ego, a royal ego, most ‘mutts’ would have called them. It was a great age for the waterwolves and the kingdom of Azalea flourished in its wealth. Minnow played his own part in the kingdom’s wealth; he was an important icon before he met up with Rin. They were destined to meet and Rin saved Minnow’s spirit, even though only Minnow sees it as such.
“Min, don’t you ever regret leaving your wealth, status and heritage?” Rin asked. Minnow was shocked at the sudden question. He swallowed the chunk of meat that was in his mouth whole and nearly choked.
“Where did that come from?” He gasped.
“Look where you were three years ago and look where you are now”
“I am looking where I am now, what do you want me to see? Because what I see is my best friend in front of me, the wolf who saved me from myself. I am happy for the first time, Rin. Back then I thought I was happy, surrounded by wealth and status and material things. But I was miserable, and you made me
realize that. I don’t need all that to be happy. We might not have a lot but we have our freedom, something you’ve always had but I only discovered it when we fought in that arena”
“That’s….” Rin tried to jump in but was cut off.
“I was bred to be a warrior; my fate was imposed on me by the royals. But when we fought our spirits synchronized and I could feel the gears inside my spirit started to turn, my real destiny started to come alive and my life only started then. You felt it too…” Minnow said wide-eyed. Rin opened his mouth, about to say something, but he just smiled.
“I did feel it. And that is why I got you to come with me, out of your captivity”
“We are destined to do great things together, my friend” Minnow said as he got up, all the muscles in his body tense and worked up as he was getting a rush through his spirit, “Tomorrow we challenge the dragon and take what is ours”
“Calm down, Minnow. Don’t get overly excited. We aren’t ready to challenge the keeper”
“We are ready when we feel ready. And my spirit says I am more than ready, my blood flows with ambition, my friend” he growled proudly.
Rin too stood up and faced Minnow, “then we are ready” he growled and they lowered their muzzles and pushed their foreheads together. The water dripping from the stalagmites dispersed into a cloud that roared deep thunder through the caverns and the cobalt vines and flowers glowed brighter than ever.

I dont really know hey. I've always loved fantasy, elemental based powers and I'm totally obsessed with wolves, so I decided to create a world with those three combined. I guess I draw a lot of my inspiration from anime coz in my head I picture it in an anime style, that is why I have so many battles, anime battles are the best.
