Someone tried to DDoS the site. There are normally 11k Users online and 10K users registered with under 1000 guests. So they pretty much flood the server with junk bot users and whatnot. Its stupid, but thank to the new systems in place I guess it stopped it.
Believe this is a HTTP attack or whatnot. Don't exactly understand the technicality of it.
