Endless Realms bestiary - Manticore
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
Another fun snarly to add to the bestiary! The art director wanted him to look less like a lion with different bits attached, and more like a unique but lion-like species. I was tempted to go add a bit of classic manticore feel by making the face slightly humanoid, but the director said she preferred something leonine if possible.

XD That's true. You should see the fellow I'm working on now :V
(( http://sta.sh/02e4cqr9y7dt 8D I like him :b ))

Haha, yeah, the wyverns in WoW were clearly manticores :b Although they did have wyvern-type wings, so I guess that was their reasoning?
I don't really see the "inorganic" but it's definitely a bit demony and not a regular lion face :b I also usually prefer the more "natural" or animal-looking faces, personally, but doesn't mean I should be putting them on all my monsters, unfortunately! In this case, though, I still like the way he looks :)
Haha, yeah, just can't take it off :b ((unless he moults sometimes?... hmm.)

I didn't comment on this!? Shame on me. Let me just say...THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS CORRECTLY! Omg I cannot begin to explain how much it annoys me when people get a manticore and chimera mixed up....I never thought you would but have you ever seen um...Raiderz? They call their flippen Manticore a Chimera....It doesn't even have 3 heads...ontop of that it flys...Chimera...do not fly...it's like -head desk. Fantasy nerd rage- lol. I love you even more for making this right. And it looks epic. Ok random rant and compliments over lol.
Thank you very much! Haha, yeah, manticores and chimeras seem to get mixed up strangely often :b (although I love both). I suppose in a way it's arguably okay, because the word chimera really just implies having really different parts, usually implied from different animals/things, so to be fair, dragons (serpent/bat) and gryphons (lion/eagle) and minotaurs (man/bull) and mermaids (man/fish) and most other fantasy creatures are ALSO all chimeras and the word starts to lose meaning in the context of mythological beasts :b
It's funny...I had first heard of manticores in the Harry Potter book series and I had no idea what it looked like. I think I pictured something like a gargoyle. Real manticores, I have since discovered are much more amazing than that. Images like this exemplify such sentiment. I think you really nailed what the art director wanted and made it much more than a lion with different bits. This manticore looks like a fully realized creature that I would only want to see from a distance!
