Michipicoten doesn't think 125 ton locomotives belong 80 feet in the air. Giant machines belong on the ground (or or the water).
Sort of funny that the weight of the Michi, once loaded, will make that locomotive look like nothing. And the boat is on water! Ain't physics odd?
I tried for a while to compose this picture, juxtaposing the ships and the locomotives and ore jennies. This may be the best one.

Oh, are they going away? I can't imagine why...! What are they getting now?
I'm not a big fan of GE products. The durability just isn't there IMHO. They are very clever at designing things to last exactly the lease term, plus 1 day :) That's an accountant's way of designing machinery :p

If you're into industrial history, I really recommend you try to visit the Iron Ranges next summer. I have a bad feeling they won't be around too much longer. So much pressure from Australia and S America on iron ore. And less and less ore is needed in the US as the blast furnaces are falling fast.
Only bright side, lower fuel prices in the near term might keep them competitive. But I don't think that will last.
Start researching early. There are amazing tours you can do, but they fill up quickly and are not widely known!
