'It went haywire'??? You've captured a very interesting character, Miyabita. Can't see anything wrong with him.
And as to being a work in progress, I could see this hanging on a wall just as it is. Not all pprtraits have to be finished-finished. Because of the lively energetic nature of the subject a slightly "unfinished" look can be used to convey that very well.

I'm not sure exactly what the character's background is, but he strongly reminds me of photos taken of T.E. Lawrence ("Lawrence of Arabia") in his motorcycling goggles and leather jacket.
