Endless Realms bestiary - Q'rolorogra
Bestiary artwork for Endless Realms, a D&D-like "pen and paper" fantasy RPG I'm working for.
I like this guy a lot :b Yeah, he's kinda creepy-looking, but I bet he could be pretty jovial if he wanted to - just look at that smiling face! 8D In fact, he even has TWO of them :V

Hehe, thank you very much! Creepy monsters are so much fun to design :D
I mean, obviously I wouldn't want to run into him, either, but he does sort of strike me as the sort of creature that will PROBABLY kill you, or at least ruin your life, but MAAAAYBE he won't? Sort of like a Loki-type character - probably bad news when he shows up, but not necessarily; either way, you hope he's not there for you, and that maybe he's in a good mood?

Honestly, I saw more of the Dug race from Star Wars with the overall anatomy build, but taken on a larger and more askewed. https://www.google.com/search?q=sta.....AQ&dpr=0.9 Still looks badass though, nice job :D
Ohhyeah, that's a given :) It's like the only super-mainstream one that's known in my observation, so it's a natural thing to use as a staple for 'walks on hands and uses feet as hands instead' build :p Really though, you made a great rendition of that without it actually looking like a Dug in the least. The muscular anatomy on how an arm would be buff if used for constant weight holding looks great :D
Haha, thanks! I'm not entirely sure, actually, but I was told just looking at him should inspire terror and unease, and that while he's definitely a predator with carnivorous tastes, he is also a bit unusual/eccentric. His lore I think might be in the process of being reworked, but I was told he's egocentric and talkative (usually spouting something mind-breaking, in one way or another), so I imagined him as being a creature that's hard to read - maaaaybe he just wants someone to talk to or tell an eldritch secret to, maybe he wants to spread chaos and insanity, or maybe he's just going to straight-up eat you :b
The face reminds me of the Leviathan from Supernatural. You don't really see their true forms because they shapeshift into humans so no one freaks the fuck out, but they eat people and when they're about to chow down, that's the face they have.
I know if my party ran into one of those, I'd take my happy-ass back to wherever because...NOPE.

This DOES really look like a xenomorph, doesn't it?
I find it interesting how it walks on its "hands" but probably holds things with its "feet," that's like one of the aliens from the podracing scene from the Star Wars prequel.
And yes, it is just horrifying. I'm not sure what dimension it comes from, but in any case, that place is NOT on my vacation list!

Heh, yeah. It wasn't intentional - mostly, I was told he was an eccentric predator who was fond of talking, so I gave him two big teethy grinning mouths :b I was also told to make him look creepy and off-putting, so I gave him no eyes and made him black and shiny. All together, it made him look like a xenomorph :V XD
Yeah, I immediately thought of that race, too. I really wanted to avoid them looking too similar, though, so I made sure the Q'rol's overall look was a good deal different!

Yes, I do think you did enough to distinguish this that it won't seem like a ripoff of Alien, and it is a really cool creature that I would not want to meet in a dark alley, or anywhere else for that matter.
What might this creature be motivated by? It seems too alien and "different" to care much about treasure, but since it's fond of talking there should be a way to reason with it if you couldn't take it on in a fight. What might players be able to give it/promise it/convince it of that could keep it from attacking?

While it's intelligent and (to some extent) sociable, I'm not sure it's entirely what you could count on to placate it - I'm pretty sure this guy is from the Dream Realm, and most (but not all) dream creatures are a bit chaotic, unstable, or unpredictable. Maybe actually challenging it to a fight and beating it up a bit would amuse and delight it, while trying to offer it gifts or flatter it might just anger it into eating you :b And the next day, the opposite would happen.
Perhaps a die could be rolled before each Q'rolorogra(yes, I admit to copy-pasting that, typing it is almost as hard as saying it) encounter to determine its current motivation, which could be something simple, like treasure(meaning it could be bribed) or food(meaning that the only way to keep it from attacking to tell it where to find something bigger), or something more complicated, such as "it wants to test your abilities" which would require either some mental challenge like a riddle, or else just a fight. Then, the players would have to try to figure out what it currently wants, and are attacked if they get it wrong.
Yes, the motivation die should be rolled BEFORE the players meet the creature, and while its result would be at first hidden, the DM has no permission to change its results and must go with whatever is rolled!
This doesn't have to just be a thing about this creature, though. A motivation die could be used for lots of creatures that are unpredictable, as is the case for even many humans, among of course other creatures.

This is some of the best examples of creature design I have ever seen. Too often, RPG monsters tend to fall into predictable patterns, such as being ripoffs from other intellectual properties or an otherwise ordinary bear for example but green and has spines. This Q'rolorogra is superb! I particularly like the arms as feet. Always a favorite of mine. This creature really is terrifying and truly alien. If I encountered it in a video game, I would probably hate it!
