An Erie steam shovel at work at HCEA show with steam and smoke erupting in every direction.
The steam from the end of the boom is exhaust from the small steam engine that's actually out on the boom. It moves the dipperstick via the large bull gear on the boom. How cool is it to have a machine with a whole bunch of steam engines strapped all over it?

A couple of the shows I've been to have had multiple machines working together on an excavation, which is very cool. But never more than one steam shovel at a show :(
I'd like to try to run one. It has to be quite a challenge to coordinate the motions. It's fun to watch the old guys who are really good with these machines!

oh I know, watching some programs on steam locomotives is facinating, that was skilled manual labor and from a team to watch the pressure, run the coal pulling levers here and there, working the valves and bleeds and just arm sand legs going all direction to keep it running smooth and not blowing up or crapping out. hard hot and dirty ( that sound kinda funny ) where modern stuff is more efficient and effective, it's neat to see the drama of the old days in action.
