Originally the four combiner teams Superion, Mensor, Defensor,and Bruticus with Metroplex were originally designed for an aborted 1985 Diaclone line named Jizai Gattai ("Free-Combination"), which was shelved when Transformers proved successful in America and Takara later elected to import it into the Hasbro line instead.

It was a Cartoon-Commercial, I have it on my 20th Anniversary Transformers Movie disc.

It was Scramble City, a direct to vhs cartoon made to promote the combiners. It was also the very first animated appearance of Ultra Magnus.

I still remember my disappointment on my (very young) birthday of being unable to get Metroplex because the Toys R Us was out. I dare not say how old I was, but the pain still lingers today. ;)
