Two chocobos enjoy the sun and surf of the beach, while a third frolics among the waves.
HE IS TOTALLY NOT DROWNING BECAUSE HE IS ON A SANDBAR. (...people can be so mean....so very mean...)
*ahem* Anyways. Immediately before going to Otakon 2008, I got to spend some time at the Outer Banks, NC. We didn't have much in the way of evening activities available, so I spent my evenings doodling. Eventually the doodle became this.
Micron inks and Prismas on drawing paper; sold at Otakon 2008. I put it in this nifty maroon border and it was awesome. Should have scanned it first, though.... :p
Forgive the digital camera; it got stuck on 72dpi all con and was thus full of FAIL.

Heh, thanks! I used markers on the chocobos (with colored pencils to shade) and kept the background all colored pencil. I'd've liked to do the background in watercolors, but didn't have them on hand (or know how to use them, frankly), but at least I got to play around with a white pen for the wave-caps and surf. :)
Thank you!
I really lament the lack of quality pictures of this - it came out all grainy and pixelated and harsh, and the whites look ew - since in RL it's so pretty! (There's nothing for it but to draw a second version, I suppose. Possibly once I get the hang of watercolors, at that...)

And no, I didn't think the chocobo in the background was drowning. Some horses like to swim in the Real World and do very well at it; why wouldn't chocobos, the horses of the Final Fantasy world, be the same?
And being birds, they'd probably be even better at it. Hollow bones make for very good buoyancy, and those legs and feet are more then big enough to paddle. :)

That was my thinking precisely. (Really, the annual Assateague/Chincoteague swim of children's book fame makes headlines here b/c it's close enough to be something of a Local Carnival/Event. Horses swim very well indeed. And, hey, KIWIS can swim - not sure if ostriches and emus do but I know kiwis do - so I figured all the more reasons chocobos might. Granted, only the blues can "run" on the water in the games - still, that doesn't mean none of the others can swim at all...)
But you'd be surprised how many people walked by and conducted the following exchange:
Congoer: "Oh, that's so great, there's one drowning in the water!"
Me: "What? No, he's swimming."
Congoer: "But he's out so far. He's drowning."
Me: "He's SWIMMING."
Congoer: "No, I'm pretty sure he's drowning."
Me: HE. IS. SWIMMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Congoer: *calls to friend* "Hey, come check this out!"
Friend: "OMG that's so cool he's drowning!"
Me: *headdesk*
Thankfully, it sold to a couple that thought it was adorable and loved the swimming chocobo and never said anything about drowning.

Y'know, it's unrelated, but the more I chat with ya, the more I look forward to living in the same area as you. :) At the least it will make getting used to the area a little less lonely.
(And an admission; I didn't think the chocobo in the background was drowning, but I did think he was bathing, since it looks like splashes near him. If you've ever seen a duck or a goose take a bath, though, you know waterfowl quite happily take baths even though they also swim. Did anyone else look at the pic and think, 'Oh, Mr. Chocobo's taking a bath out to sea'?).
