But anyway onto the new character~ Enjoy reading about this HUGE, sweet-natured, arena wrecking ball~
Name: Grace Matsutake
Gender: Female
Species: Hariyama
Age: 17
Height: 8’10”
Weight: 500+ lbs (exact weight is her little secret~)
Ability: Thick Fat
Personality:
Grace can be summed up very simply in few words including sweet, optimistic, down-to-earth, and kind. Grace’s natural setting is being friendly, kind, and sweet to the point of slightly idealistic optimism with just enough common sense and self-awareness to keep her from being delusional or out of touch with reality. She tries to treat everyone with kindness and friendliness, tinted with a casual touch, with her sweet disposition making it hard for her to even intentionally say anything bad about anyone whether it’s true or not. She is aware there are bad things in life and not-so-nice people… she just prefers to hope and think that most of the people she meets are really nice, deep down if not on the surface. This isn’t to say that she won’t get angry if mistreated or if she sees people mistreating others, her patience with people might be huge but there IS a set limit and when that limit is reached she’ll give the person who pushed her that far a brutal chewing out and likely remember their actions next time when debating whether to give them the benefit of the doubt or not.
There are ways to test Grace’s patience or win her over more easily or quicker than normal though. Grace has a major soft spot for family and children due to a close relationship with her own parents and her little siblings. She feels strongly about loyalty to your family and relations, displaying traits like this is an easy way to win her over. By the same token she loves little kids and tends to dote over and gush about them due to her massive soft spot for her little siblings making children, kindness to children, and/or just being a good big sibling in general an easy way to instantly win her approval. On the other end of the spectrum bullying or needless cruelty, particularly to those smaller/younger/weaker then you, is an easy, one way ticket to earing Grace’s ire without any second chances.
Despite her species and battle prowess Grace actually abhors violence, especially when outside the ring, and will never respond with physical harm to others even when she does lose her temper. She is willing to threaten with it (bringing up a spanking when her little siblings act up, but to date she’s never actually done it) or throw her huge mass around as a deterrent if needed. Even inside the ring she actually hates hurting people which has helped shape her battle style. Resorting to physical violence as a first response is a sure way to get her disapproval, though in what way depends on who does it (children get a stern talking to and corner time, other teens will just get a look or a yelling at if she gets angry enough).
Lastly Grace IS very much aware of how huge, heavy, and strong she is (especially after evolution) and works to keep from accidentally breaking anyone or anything because of this. She used kid gloves with everyone and everything she handles (kids and babies especially). It also leads her to be slightly annoyed with people who refuse to stop bringing up her size and weight, in the form or insults or other ways, since she is distinctly aware of it at all times. Thanks to this sufficient prodding in this manner will get a reaction from Grace just like bullying others would.
History:
Who Grace’s birth parents are and where she was born is unknown since she was found abandoned in a Hoenn back alley when she was only a few months old, crying her little lungs out. Luckily despite being abandoned like that she was found to be a healthy, if exceedingly large for her age, baby and soon sent off to an orphanage when no trace of parents, family, or even birth records could be found for her. While their one of the women running the orphanage joking referred to the chubby, clumsy makuhita baby as Grace… and the name stuck fast. Grace spent a year and a half at the orphanage before she was adopted by a loving couple who were incapable of having kids at the moment…
To be specific a Breloom (her daddy) and ludicolo (her mommy) couple who hadn’t know what they’d been looking for in a child but were won over by the sweet natured toddler despite her unusual size. The couple were upper middle class with the Breloom being a former junior-league battler who worked for a local pro-league as a manager and talent scout, and the ludicolo being a former dancer/singer who’d opted to be a stay at home mom now that they had a child. Between the two they raised Grace with as much love and stability they could give her and the young fighting type loved them just as much back.
Thanks to her dad’s dealing with the leagues and work as a scout he was easily able to see Grace’s immense talent for battling from an early age and insisted on training her since he felt it’d be a shame for her to waste such talent. Even at this early age Grace had slight misgivings about this, but being unable to properly express them and not wanting to disappoint daddy kept her quiet about this. Insisting Grace at least try something from her side of the family as well her mom signed the hariyama up for a dance class… though she let Grace pick which one. Both her parents were surprised when she chose ballet, though not as much as the other girls in the class. Grace enjoyed that class a good deal more than the lessons on fighting, though she did like the quality time with daddy aspect.
When Grace was around eight years old a new medical procedure that would allow her mother to have natural children came down the pipeline and, after talking it over with Grace and making sure they had the money to handle a new addition to the family, her parents decided to go for it. Sure enough after the procedure and “testing it” as they told Grace at the time they found it worked, her mommy was pregnant. Unfortunately it worked too WELL since she gave birth to triplets putting an unexpected strain on the family’s budget. Feeding and providing for the three baby lotad while trying to not sacrifice things like Grace’s schooling lead to her family having to move to a much smaller, cheaper apartment as well as Grace having to spend most of her time outside of school helping care for her baby siblings.
This was their life for about 2 years and just when things looked like they’d be looking up with her father getting a promotion and a decent pay-raise two things happened to ruin it. The first was Grace, having always been huge for her age, evolving way earlier then she should of increasing her size and weight dramatically. This meant she needed completely new clothes and her food-intake skyrocketed whether she wanted it to or not. The second thing that happened confirmed that the medical procedure had helped her mommy more than expected since she was pregnant again. Not willing to give them up or abort them the family gained two new members as Grace’s mom gave birth to twins, helping to once again put the family as a whole in the red and in danger of ending up on the street.
It was around this point where Grace, desperate to help her family, began looking up and joining any junior battling tournament in the area that offered prize money. She needed to do SOMETHING to help support her family, or at least ease the money drain she felt she was putting on them, and since most people wouldn’t hire the world’s biggest 10 year old this was the only thing she could think of to do. She still had misgiving about fighting but between her early evolution helping to wake the huge amount of battling talent she had, the sheer size and weight advantage her early evolution gave her, and the training she’d had with her daddy Grace became the terror of the local leagues. Stomping mud-holes in most opponents barring those who focused on special attack… and even then her massive strength and endurance gave her an impressive track-record in the tournaments. Grace’s size, power, and tendency to end matches in a hurry (to minimize the amount of possible damage she could do to her opponents) also earned her several nicknames like “Steamroller”, “Bulldozer”, “Juggernaut”, and “Fighting Mountain” that, while probably meant as praise from her opponents who were in the age-group where those were cool, just made the hariyama feel terribly ashamed. The prize money she won from the tournaments helped her family at least.
The steady prize money Grace brought in from these tournaments helped offset the cost of new clothing for her and some of her food costs… but it wasn’t enough to fully help as she had to transfer to a public school when her parent’s couldn’t afford the cost of her private school any more. Luckily her infamy in the local junior leagues acted as a buffer that kept anyone who would have been stupid enough to pick on the huge, early developed girl far away. Unfortunately it also made it difficult for Grace to make any real friends since most of the kids willing to talk to her were hard-core battle junkies. She soldiered through this though, for the good of her family helping to keep her from breaking down and to maintain her cheerful, optimistic disposition.
Three years of this went by with the family scraping and clawing its way along, while Grace’s infamy in the local junior leagues and beyond grew due to rumor and word of mouth, another baby on the way due to faulty contraceptive looked to be what would finally put them all on the street. But when the choice on whether to give up the child they wouldn’t be able to care for came up a miracle occurred… in a sense. On of Grace’s Father’s bosses had been following the hariyama’s work in the leagues and had become aware of the family’s… troubles. He’d been planning to offer a scholarship to the PCA for Grace anyway, with the unspoken agreement being she’d come work for the leagues at least briefly after she graduated, but this little issue forced him to step in early to help... though whether it was simply for a future star battler or genuine concern he did not share.
Acting as an “Uncle” of sorts towards the hariyama and her family he helped them with their housing issues and a small bit with their money issues… they were still on a stretched taut, shoe-string budget but they weren’t going to end up on the street anymore. The unspoken cost being that Grace would be working for her father’s pro-league upon graduated as her “Uncle” had originally planned… though this is a sacrifice Grace makes willingly if it is for her family. She finds comfort in the fact that her “Uncle” at least helped her family out of the goodness of his heart… she’s fairly certain it was anyway. Either way her high school option had been decided by this so at age 14 she kissed her family goodbye and headed to start her four years at the best combat academy in the world, the PCA.
Where she has actually found she fits in much better due to not standing out so badly as opposed to her old school and most students considering battling a normal thing or just part of school meaning it’s normally not the focus of casual conversation. Thanks to this Grace has managed to make several friends, closest of which is a grumpig by the name of Ray who is the same grade as her and shares several personality traits with Grace. As it stands she occasionally fights alongside Ray in doubles matches and has promised to join him in his goal of forming a 4 mon team (Team Heavy Weight)… but that doesn’t look like it’ll happen anytime soon despite the grumpig’s efforts. At least she’d made several friends while apologizing for how forward he is…
Moveset:
Freshmen – Fake Out, Bullet Punch, Force Palm, Revenge
Sophomore – Thunder Punch, Fire Punch, Belly Drum, Bulldoze
Junior – Smelling Salts, Heavy Slam, Knock Off, Reversal
Senior – Feint*, Detect*, Substitute*, Iron Head*
*still learning
Fighting Style:
From a purely “Moves” standpoint Grace’s fighting style is shockingly direct and focused on high impact damage. She always starts her matches with Fake Out (which makes sense due to that being the only time the move can be used) which is less a clap and more a thunderclap due to the size of her hands. She’ll follow this up with Belly Drum to max her attack at the cost of hit points and begin smacking the opponent around with whatever works best against them. Her hold item, either Shell Bell (a gift from her uncle) or Leftovers, helps her compensate for the amount of damage Belly Drum does… though she has a massive amount of stamina making the damage less of a handicap then it looks.
Due to her very loose amount of formal training she tends to be hard to predict outside her initial combo though, falling more into choosing her moves based on the situation rather than any pre-set style. If the opponent tries to keep their distance she’ll use Bullet Punch and Bulldoze. If the opponent is immune to fighting or normal type moves she’ll use her small array of other moves. Knock off to counter troublesome items and Smelling Salts to capitalize on any accidental paralysis her Force Palm or Thunder Punch causes (as well as work with Ray in double matches since he knows Thunder Wave). As her “Trump Card” moves she has Heavy Slam, in which she’ll either grab her opponent and fall on top of them or jump up and crash land on them, and the new move she’s learning Iron Head, which lets her throw her weight forward into something less like a headbutt and more like a missile. For her senior year she’s also working to learn more tactical and defensive moves since up to that point she’s lacked them.
From an actual fighting style standpoint Grace is an unusual girl in that her lack of formal training in traditional sumo (which more people expect from a hariyama) and amount of training in boxing and ballet show up quite plainly. For example she usually opts to use actual punches as opposed to the more traditional open palm slaps, though she can perform those as needed, as her standard strike. Her footwork also show her oddness as she tends to slip from the solid, firm footed sumo stance her species normally uses to something more mobile and flexible akin to boxing while using her ballet training to make these shifts work instead of just being clumsy. Despite this her speed is still a major weakness since she just can’t move fast without buildup (though due to her size one of her steps equals two or three of a normal persons) and when she does get moving quickly stopping becomes impossible to do quickly due to how much mass she has. Grace compensates by using her ballet training to spin and take quick, light steps to move shorts distances faster than people would think she could move making it difficult to get behind her/out of her sight and letting her close gaps between her and her opponent as needed.
Lastly the major thing of note about Grace’s fighting style is her tendency to go for a quick resolution to a match via immense force. She might not like fighting and hurting people but the longer a match goes on the more likely someone might be seriously injured so the hariyama prefers to try and end them quickly. She does this by beating the stuffing out of the opponent with as few blows as possible… by making those blows really, really darn hard. This has proved to be an effective strategy for winning matches even if a good deal of her opponent’s refuse to let her end it quickly or are too tough/skilled/durable to be taken down fast.
Miscellaneous Facts:
- Despite Grace’s hands being bigger than most people’s heads and her fingers being equally massive she is quite skilled at using them to do delicate work ranging from childcare (changing diapers, feeding, dressing, etc thanks to her little siblings), sewing (which she learned to try and help insure her clothes lasted and save money on clothing bills), and cooking (which she learned to help her mom out… though at best she’s only average). She is also excellent at controlling her strength insuring she doesn’t accidentally break something or someone with her massive hands.
- Grace has no sense of fashion… or to be exact she gave it up upon evolution. If it fits her and isn’t going to get her arrested or kicked out of school then it’s good since she didn’t exactly have the spare money to be picky with what she wore after evolution. Her sheer size makes finding clothing difficult as it is after evolving. Because of this her wardrobe is full of simple or mismatched clothing made to be durable over anything else. Also thanks to her Thick Fat partially insulating her from cold weather she can get by without any heavier winter coats saving her money on that.
- Grace misses her family terribly and often emails or calls them to see how they’re doing… her “Uncle” is nice enough to allow her avenues to contact them regularly. Despite this and due to having had several babies, toddlers, and little kids around her for the past few years Grace has developed a fondness for them often finding excuses to gush and coo over any she happens to see (though since she’s at the school most of the time that list is limited). She knows she’s projecting her issue about missing her little sibling and is embarrassed about it… but still, she can’t help it~ She’s become especially interested in the group her friend Maddie coaches, a team of tiny teens known as Team Pre-K.
- Grace has yet to give up looking for a job since she is too old to qualify for the junior tournament league anymore meaning she’s not bringing in any prize money (and the sheer difference between the league back home and in Viridian would make it a bad call anyway). She’s landed a few odd jobs and the like, mostly heavy lifting and physical labor, but they don’t pay much and are short term. Because of this Grace is looking for more long term employment so she doesn’t have to rely so much on her “Uncle” for her expenses.
- Grace knows next to nothing about her birth parents (save for their species due to egg moves) and has no interest in know due to them abandoning her when she was only a few months old… but she’s suspected for a while that her birth mother might have been on stat-enhancing drugs while pregnant with her as an explanation for her early evolution and massive size. The doctors never found anything though (or probably even looked for that matter) so she only has her suspicions…
Anyway I hope you enjoyed reading about her, if you did (or even if you didn't) and have any questions for or about her please feel free to ask below ^,^ she'll be happy to try and answer them... within reason of course.
So thanks for reading, please fav & comment, and have a great day! =D
