This monster engine is a Nordberg SUPAIRTHERMAL V16 multifuel engine, probably 5000 hp (6700 kW), driving an alternator at a municipal power plant.
Nordberg Manufacturing of Milwaukee built some of the most amazing huge machines I've ever seen; more pictures of their products will follow :) According to the web, the founder was a former Finnish sea caption and the company eventually bought out the diesel company of Adolphus Busch (founder of the beer company) who built the first engines under license from Rudolf Diesel in the US.
You used to see the Nordberg plant along a major highway in Milwaukee, but it's now probably something useful like a nice shopping mall or lovely condos.

Nordberg's huge radial engines really blow my mind. They were mostly used in aluminum smelters and water pumping. Apparently one exists on display in a park in Florida. Search for "Nordberg radial engines".
I would love to see one of these in action, but I don't think there are any still operational, at least not in the USA. A contact was supposed to be watching for one for me but I've never heard back.

My uncle made a living as a crane operator, hauling monsters like these in and out of power plants. It is amazing how much racket they create on start-up, but once they're at speed and normalized it's just this wonderful smooth hum. But they're still huge! People really don't get how big these are, even with a ladder leading to the cylinder decking, unless there's some sort of item included for scale.
Not that I'm asking you to do that (I think it would ruin the picture, honestly!); I'm merely making passing conversation/observation.
