One of my favorite stories that I've written is "Sinnesteuersymphonie," for the Spontoon Island website. (You can find it here: http://spontoon.rootoon.com/SPwSSSCn.html ) Essentially put, it's a tale of romance and mad science, in which a beautiful aviatrix crash-lands on a mysterious North Pacific island populated by mad scientists. She encounters Langford Forrester, a whitetail buck that has developed a technique for wiping the brains of criminals and controlling the resulting slaves with music from a mighty Wurlitzer-type organ.
Originally, Rusty Haller did the illustrations for the story, but unfortunately, he died in the midst of his work. I got a chance to get Phil Foglio, the great artist behind Girl Genius (www.girlgeniusonline.com) to do some artwork, so here's a tribute to Rusty's sound and engaging design, as interpreted by Phil. Rusty, wherever you are, this is for you, lad.
The detail work is astounding, as I think you'll agree. I do not know if that's real music on the stand, but it wouldn't surprise me!

The more I look at this image the more details appear. In his "Girl Genius" comics Phil once drew up a mechanical band where all the robots were "Funny Animal" characters. In the next issue though the fellow who created the mechanical marvel had to scrap the band in order to repair some sort of calculating machine. Kind of a pity, but it did make sense as to why the navigational computer had a 'morph cat playing a violin incorporated into it's workings.
The image you allude to was one of the inspirations for this particular drawing. I knew that P.F. was more than capable of it. And so he was! (I love that splash page, it's one of my favourites from the entire series.)
