The experience is rewarding, but the degrees now a days are ignored.
They are little more then the beginning of your life than actual prof you can do a job.

I'm in journalism right now but I'm thinking about changing to computer programming.

To be honest, you don't need a degree to be a journalist anymore. You also don't have to have a degree to program a computer, you just need C++ certification. I'd go after the certificates first, then get a degree just to top it off.
