I rushingly tried to paint my friends dads beloved Mercedes for Christmas. Given I'm not one for painting cars, I think I did an alright job!

haha, drawing cars isn't easy, right? :) been there, abused someone else's lines for it... or made aphoto of a model car I own.
anyway, asuide a few details looking a bit wonky, it's still amazingly fine work.
the W123, to many people the last real mercedes. the successor isn't a bad car, either, but too much plastics and controversial design ideas... at least it doesn't corrode away as easily. :)

yes the W123 is by most people regarded as the last real Mercedes but 'it corrodes so fast that your mind cannot even follow' (figuratively speaking) especially the first series is extremely rust sensitive. With the successor, the W124 the rust-protection was much better and body-cavity sealing was standard
with dangerous you mean expensive or are you refering to the possibility of a breaking spring? The only other really dangerous rust thing about the w124 would be the rear-axle attachment ^^
All other rust issues are typical Mercedes of the 70s til late 90s (like jackingpoints, Wings etc.), at leat right now I don't remember anything special/critical.
I've invested 1600 bucks into my W124 for rust-repairs but nothing of that was by all means critical or dangerous :)
My brother owns a Mercedes C-class built in 2000 (W203) it's also quite rust sensitive, means the whole car body has rust although all safty-relevant parts don't show any curusion yet :)
But once he had electrical problems and asked me for help...in the end he had water in his fusebox and that caused some electrical shortcuts, all it needed was drying everything and bying a new lid for the fusebox with an intact rubber seal. costed only 20 Euro by Mercedes, the best deal of his life :D

I'm actually referring to those rear-suspension joints. in extreme cases the axle does what it wants, but generally spoken areas like that should be stable. but you seem to know that already. :)
the 203 has a problem with the front spring upper case, which can corrode out of the body. it's already a pretty thin cup of pressed steel connecting to the body with six weld spots. if it breaks away your front end sinks down. in extreme cases you may lose the spring... also, the front end lower crossbeam, typically covered by front bumper and lower plastic case, corrodes like hell. it's purpose is to carry the cooler assembly and top keep the front together in cases of accidents, so it shouldn't taken lightly. I'd check those points if I were you, and conserve them with anti-rust grease if they are still allright and stable. at the auto shop where I work at we had a number of 203 where we had to fix those points a couple times.
oy electrics. even a computer can't help, when some error actually points at another problem. like "Lambda sond fault" is often a problem with faulty spark plugs or a leak between air mass sensor and engine...

I don't know I just adore the w124 but that's maybe cause my father gave me one to my 18th birthday
Thank you for your advice, i will have a talk with me brother :)
yup I can imagine that this whole computer diagnosis doesn't work as accurate as it is supposed to ^^
In the case of my brother, he really had a small amount of water in the fusebox of his w203 and that water caused a short circuit with the CAN-bus and ground and was the reason why his interior blinked like a christmas tree... talking about computers my brother has another problem with his w203, two years ago he had to replace his ingnition lock and since then in the menu of his car computer the mask where he can adjust his clock is vanished. You can scroll through the whole menu, but when the mask, where you can adjust the onboard clock should appear, it just skipts it, have you ever seen or heard of of such a problem?
(and yes we tried disconnecting the batterei and waiting for an hour)
Merry Christmas to you, by the way!

haha, good reason. :)
water does a lot of damage to electrics. BMW had a compartment in the front for a while where the comp sat, and closed it with a tin lid. but it was never really tight, and in some cases the compartment filled until the comp was like, swimming in juice... needless to say the water ruined it all.
I am not sure what's causing this. some errors come from trivial things that seem to have no connection. you might have to "initialize" the new part, telling the computer, "hey, there is a new component, recognize it so we can continue!" instead the comp thinks it's still faulty and says LOLnope I'M gonna hide the clock because I can! or something. (of course I poke fun, but in times it feels like that for sure. also, errors that are not implemented, but still there, or say, "error is not documented by the maker; just ignore" makes me wonder about the sanity of the makers.)

yeah, who knows what a computer is calculating or not *lol*
I'm studying electrical engineering at the moment and itÄs quite scaring how many errors accure in the BUS systems in such a car, that you could limit to a minimum if you would invest just a little bit more time of development and maybe a few higher quality components^^
My brother let the change as well as the programming of his ingnition lock do in a authorized Mercedes-Benz repair shop, so if they can't make it work right ... you understand what i want to say, right?
I would try it myself but neither do I have the software nor a appropriate computer to install it^^
Anyway Thank you for your time! :)

yeah, especially european makers like large margins, so the components cone from all over the world. made in germany, like hell... even cheap rides start at 9k euro, and these work more reliable than a 'cedes these days.
aha, okay. then again even contracted dealers are at a loss, because nobody tells them where to ask when it comes to trouble, and those are often outsourced losers somewhere remote who have no clue either. but are cheap.
anyway, at your service. :)

My w116 1973 450se is a freeking tank even with its rusted floor pan. Ive stripped it of a un needed things. Now itsnmy v8 romper stomper and for 10 years of flooring it and getting it sideways. Burning out and all around driving it like a racecar. It has yet to brake a piece of suspension or frame. The engine just dont give a flying eff and revs to redline at least twice a day. 260k miles and counting.

Hey that's pretty cool, my dad owns same car, a 280 CE *lol* though his's is brown XD
It's really a lovely pic
Would you give me the honor of drawing my car http://www.furaffinity.net/view/15162915/ too ? (it's a W124, the successor of the W123 *lol*)
