He's the shy, good little boy turned bad. Originally just a cheetah, he became endowed with certain aspects of the lion, like the mane, tail and strength.
As for the design, I may tweak the mane. I don't like it myself, but I want it to show that a bit of his background.

In my story, Reutus, was supposed to take shape of a lion first. By sheer coincidence the cheetah took the lion's place. I won't mention how, until I draw the comic.
A summary of reutus.
Reutus twin brother of Leutus Acires, is also known by his other names in lore:
Abas the abominable, Ares god of war, Hypnos god of sleep, and Endymion courter of Selene. Though separate in lore, they are one god.
While not a god of a specific realm or quality he can still be regarded as the ultimate executioner. In the underworld he often takes his form in that of the black drake to either eat, torture or enslave his hapless victims. Cold, and calm, Reutus is rarely quick to anger and deals with unpleasant individuals quite rapidly.
