You seem to be mistaken, good sir! The moon texture itself appears to be quite large, probably larger than 500x500 pixels originally and stretched out to the current size. But the outline looks like it used to be 64x64 pixels! Perhaps a 64x64 pixel mask, resized without filtering. Why anyone would do that, though, I don't know... But I think that particular aspect of this image is almost artful in its wonkyness. A medium resolution moon with super low-res silhouette!
