Here's the general idea of how I followed the fur pattern for the last tail I made. For both pieces, I placed the pattern at a bit of a diagonal to get the fur flow. After finishing my tail, I discovered it might have been more helpful to divide the main piece into two in order to make sure the fur went exactly the way I needed it to.
