And I'd guess that the airstrip was broken up enough to make it not immediately usable. The landing is likely to do more damage to the plane, but if he can put it back into working order and level enough runway maybe...

The bunkers would need too much effort to mess with, and have been stripped out for decades. The airstrip is left as is as they simply don't have the time (and resource) to do anything to it. Besides, how would tehy get off afterwords. The bug out was on the order of take only what you can carry on a transport plane and burn or break what you can't take with you right now.

Stripped for decades? So this was an old base that was temporarily reoccupied? Or has she been there that long?

Its an old site, an outpost of various empires that have waxed and wained across the great ocean over the centuries. The current occupiers are there for little more than to claim they hold it, but serves no signifigence in the current war.

That makes it even more fun. Who knows what kinds of surprises are hidden or buried about the place?

So would it be fair to say this was inspired in part by the Falklands War?

For someone with some form of survival training, the wreckage from a hastily demolished base will have vast amounts of useful bits and pieces. Her main short term problems will be fresh drinking water and edible food. A south pacific island is warm enough that shelter demands are fairly minimal. More for shelter from sun and sunburn, which is a significant hazard to a fair-skinned person in that part of the world. If she was some sort of office-worker without field and or survival training, then survival is unlikely.

I am interested in seeing more of this story. *grins* And with any luck, the X rated side story.

Right you are about useful salvage, fair amount of monotonous food, some tools and arms and ammo (simply setting off a single charge in the dump doesn't insure the destruction of all the contents) but water is iffy and there is no wood or fabric left. Danni has effectively no war skills training but did have a girl scout like background, so can make due. Being furry covered reduces sun issues, though simple suit optional is about as "X" as the thing gets.

This looks almost like a first ref for an animated cartoon. I suppose the concept is the same. When I used to doodle comics (back in the '70s and '80s) I would do character references without a clue that doing so was de rigueur. When I met Chuck Jones at a cel show and sale here in Connecticut in the 1980s, he showed me a few. He had lots of time; my girlfriend and I were the only other people there.

I was thinking the island was forested (like Fiji). Hmmmm…I didn't expect the island to be a small atoll…man…it doesn't even look like it has vegetation.

Great job on the setting...

It is literally a desert island, just coral sand and nothing living on it. Previous occupiers attempted to create some tillable soil, but couldn't spare the water.
