This was a Christmas gift for
olympiaxylaige, who is a great friend. The front side is an abstract representation of her fursona, seen here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6083972/
The yellow is a single piece of fleece, the brown pieces are all individually cut out and machine-sewn on.
The back side is a stock fleece print of lizards, for obvious reasons.
I joined the two pieces together by cutting fringe and tying the pieces to each other like a "no-sew" blanket. (There are instructions all over the internet). The finished blanket is about 80" by 50".
I really liked working on this, first of all because it was a labor of love, but also because it gave me some interesting design challenges. I've never done much in terms of visual art, but I had to figure out how to make a visually interesting design that was easy enough to cut and sew but also still "looked" like Oly.
The next problem that I ran into is that it's really difficult to manage a single piece of fabric as large as a blanket. On one side, all the fabric has to get bunched up so it will fit between the needle and the body of the sewing machine, and it has to be constantly rotated and adjusted, especially in the case of the spirals in the center. That's different from sewing a garment or a fursuit, because with those things you are generally sewing right at the edge of the fabric, not in the center, so it's much easier to manage.
The third problem is that fleece is very stretchy, and moreso in one direction than the other. That was easy enough to take care of, I just used a LOT of pins, one every couple inches, but it was still a bit nervous because I wasn't sure if anything had moved out of place until I finished and spread it all out to inspect it.
Anyway, I really enjoyed making this, and the recipient also really liked it a lot, which is a great thing to see :)
