Gift - Desert Storm
~~~
Holiday gift art for my friend,
Snaphance , featuring the desert dragon, Saif!
You may remember Saif as I've drawn him a couple times before, once in a collab with Snap! His design is so cool. ^^ But you've never seen him like this! That's right, folks, take a closer look... There are NO LINES. I DID IT.
Those of you who have been following my journals a bit more closely over the past few months might recall that I've been meaning to get back into lineless art. I did it for years straight when I was a youngin' on DA, but quit working with the style pretty abruptly, and for a number of reasons that I won't get into here. Long story short, this is a very big deal for me.
And I'm just so tickled with how it turned out! I really was a bit shaky at first, but once the values started to sharpen up, the whole piece flowed from there. I had a blast working on all the little gnarled details and organic shapes. As far as value/contrast/saturation go, I still have work to do, but for having not done a lineless piece, in, oh, I don't know...almost three years? Yeah, I'm very pleased with this.
For those curious and who have asked me before, yes, I intend on making this available as a commission style in the future. Expect some upcoming pieces similar to this, just for myself to get a bit more practice with it, before I make it official.
Critique is welcome.
Hope you like it, Snap! <3 Happy Holidays!
Oh wow... that detail.....I can't get over how much you put into his horns alone, much less the rest of him. How you've put little scratch marks all along them that would undoubtably come with a life in the desert and its harsh winds. This is easily some of the closest you can come to how a dragon would look in the flesh. Stunning work!
What an amazing surprise, he looks absolutely wicked :D I love it so much, those awesome implied scale and scratch mark details and the desert sand and the entire mood in this! You've done a fantastic job with this, and I'm honoured to be the receiver of your first lineless piece in so long! I can't wait to see how you'll develop that style, this is definitely a great start! Thank you!
