A little less subtle than normal for me, I think.
This isn't something that I've personally had happen, but I have seen it happen with a lot of other artists. It's not always fetish stuff either. Sometimes it's fanart from a particular show, or hell even just drawing a specific GENDER.
Young artists? Here's a tip for telling real friends from people using you for your art: Real friends will never TELL you forcibly what to draw. They'll let you draw what makes you happy and your friendship should NEVER rely on if you draw what they want or not.

Crap, I remember that show! Funny thing is I find VHS tapes of it laying about in the damndest of places. Dollar stores and Big Lots are places where it pops up from time to time as well as some mom and pop video stores that still have VHS.
Course the weirdest thing I saw was at a Big Lots for a budget PC game called
*and I SWEAR to GOD this is true*
"Alien Disco Safari"

Grab the second panel, substitute me for "the population in general" and "the market" and have fun reading nearly what passes as "art criticism" in a place or two I go when some stuff are brought up even if the said artist is just a hobbyist
and I've been working to people to stop saying that kind of retarded shit

Happens waaaay too much, they truly ought to be shot ú.ù The worst of them all are those who try to bypass this warning by acting all sweet and friendly, you get to know each other personally, but then slowly work their way towards doing just that; then it stings. Makes it a little hard to tell who's got motives
your case is special because an entire lj community has a segment entirely devoted to saying how you shouldn't draw such pictures because you are raping the reputation of the fandom or whatever the fuck
its not just a koala but rather an entire city of koalas entirely devoted to saying you are "unsuccessful" because you draw wierd shit
no siree

I mean that WTF_FA used to consider her a regular target since she draws messed up things and HOLY SHIT FURRY PENN AND TELELR YOU'VE RAPED MY MASTURBATING-AT-MILTON-FRIENDMAN'S-HORSHIT-HOOD
not to mention the hilarious misconceptions they've made of her entirely based on the fact that she draws messed up stuff

I guess it's pointless if it doesn't happen to you.
It becomes very pointed when it happens to you multiple times a week, on and on. Difficult to ignore something that stays in your face.
Too many people with way too high of a feeling of entitlement do not understand what it takes to do the art thing. They figure it just appears from someone's hand and that the production should always cater to their desires, because, well, if it wasn't for them, we artists wouldn't have any reason to draw, right? Their approval of artist's work is entirely why the art gets done, isn't it?
Would that more of these opinionated twits actually take the time and try to produce something of their own to contribute to the fandom, rather and sit around, expounding their opinions on everyone and rubbing their palms raw. There may be some better appreciation of what's out there and maybe fewer complaining pieces like that.

Yeah...
Hey Cerb, I kinda shouted a challenge with the link to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_monsters
whoops, that ain't right.
Just a sec... okay found it!

Since I know you're pretty badass with flash, loops, and basically music videos, I figured a Doctor Who Disco video done by you would rock the house.
Course, my knowledge of and resources of Doctor Who remixes is pretty extensive (I kid you not), and it just kind of just popped in my head as a "Wouldn't it be cool if..." kind of thing.
So yeah, subject matter irrelevant. How you do it, dun care. I just think it'd be neat if you used that music for something.
And I figure you must at least be familiar with Doctor Who one way or another.
You are British after all. (How else would your website be hosted on a British domain extension?)
So yeah. Challenge issued, but you can pick and choose which challenges you want to accept. Just an idea.
Anyway... yeah.
I need to find ways to offer trades to get arts done by rawk artists here.
Oh crap... I'm a writer.

Oh god. I love this, I think I love you. Can I just start linking this to people when they try to get free art? Cause I LOVE drawing gift art, but I hate it when people ask for, nay DEMAND, free art. Then they get ten shades of pissy when I say no. >:(
I have had this exact conversation before:
random furry - "Hey, want to yiff?"
me - "No."
r.f. - "Oh. Will you draw my character?"
me - "Sure, would you like to see my price list?"
r.f. - "No I meant for free."
me - "Sorry, I don't do requests."
r.f. - "well fine, fuck you too"

I gotta admit sometimes an artist i like draws something I dont like, or witchs to drawing nothing but stuff I dont like, but I still feel very strongly that this comic is very awsome. you hit the nail on the head.
If you dident buy it, you have no right to bitch about it. Art is personal, it can be shared and it can even be a gift, but it should never be forced.

Meh, I figure, I can ask someone to draw something that I would like to see, weither or not they will draw it is up to them. Same way, if someone askes me to draw something, I might draw it, I might not. Depends on if I want to draw it or not.
Honestly, I'm pretty good about not begging for art and not turning away people politely asking for it.
I mean, take this artwork for example. I like it, I like your style. Am I going to ask for a commission, trade, request from you? No. I see that you are not open for those things, nor are you asking for them. If you openly went, "Do anyone have anything they would like drawn?" I would ask you to draw something, if you take up on my suggestion is up to you. Or if you said, "Does anyone want to buy any commissions?" I would also say yes, but you also have the right to refuse me business.
Just because people are willing to buy stuff from you, doesn't mean you have to sell it.
Also, same reason why I alter my prices for artwork that I like to draw or not. If it's something I'm not comfortable with, I'm going to charge more. If it's something that I like drawing, I will charge less.

This is so fricken true. I've gotten people just asking me out of nowhere to draw stuff for free when I clearly state I don't do request ('cept for people I consider friends but I do them on my time). Fortunately I haven't had people just be rude about yet. I'm so tired of request stuff.
But anyways, I love the expressions here! Especially the first and last panels! XD

To be fair, people do get their knots in a twist when an artist draws something for so long, but radically changes to another, leaving the arts one formerly does as only a stepping stone. They'll watch with cautious optimism if they're into it, and they'll throw hell if it's something they don't like to see. People don't feel like leaving the old ways they felt the artist has abandon, so they cling for a bit, even if there's close to hopelessness, praying for the old ways to return, but to never come.
There will always be reruns. It's nice to miss those good old days. That is why we complain if something isn't up to par for the present. We have to let go someday.
I don't mind that artists are trying new things; I believe that artists are natural risk-takers and have the potential for something new and exciting. It's just that how an artist get the foot at the door of the world; if you basically done one consistent theme for a while with a fanbase, believe me change is not something on their minds especially when they've got a language to communicate with, compared to an artist trying new themes and ideas with a community that respects that. Change in subject matter can be very good; the best it can happen is that a lot of people are happy with your ideas. However, alienate your audience constantly, and be prepared to be place as a "has-been" status, back from the day that artist drew fan-art and became a symbol for "hit show fan artist" for a living to some interior design noone but the artist really cared about.
Good news is you start with a fresh start with potential new fans.
"You can't love a crowd the same way you can love a person." Hugh Macleod
Then again, this is just my interpretation of the image. It's funny that we desire change when everything looks bad, even if we blow things out of proportion, but denies change when everything is great the way they are, even if there is room for improvement.

I agree for most of it. I love being commissioned but if i COULD do free art, i would. Sadly because i'm poor and stuff is expensive, commissions must be done ): otherwise ppl, don't bother artists with requests unless they want to. or if u got the cash to make them say yes XD.
It's very true really.
I cycle through a lot of different subjects/fetishes and you can notice how if you a few months later return to a certain thing you get people re-watching you. Then they instantly add you back to they're IM listings and ask requests as hey, your drawing that thing again they love so let's try the "I love your artwork <3 <3 <3 Do you take requests?" thing again! Been there, done that far to often.

What if an artist friend of yours is stuck doing one, single, specific kind of generic style and he doesn't seem to be improving himself at all? Instead, he just does the same thing over and over just with different characters and facial expressions. (useless and generic pinups). He wants commissions, but doesn't seem to get that many, and now he's degenerated into what he calls "sketchy style". He doesn't seem to bother cleaning anything up from the sketch stage. Just colors it flatly in Open Canvas and calls it finished.
I can relate to this. I had friends that just liked me cause I did preggy art for a little bit. I had some people want me to draw some more of it when I really won't do it at this point. Also when I was drawing alot of fat furs and such. Yeah I have done alot of them, but just cause I don't do them all the time doesn't mean that you shouldn't like me cause I draw other things. Kinda lame if you ask me.
...Loved it. It's amazing. Though, I can understand the attitude towards those who force you to do draw things that make them happy, but at the same time I think that surprising people with something they like is also kind. Just my two cents.
Note: re-read and it's still awesome.

True, and they'll give you an opinion on your stuff even if they don't really like it...Not letting you in a endless void...
But they never do that...

Holy crap, ocean of comments.
Haha um, yeah, I've had this experience. Do you ever have people who want to OC with you so that you'll be more likely to draw their one specific request? That's happened to me. The person was then under the impression that I was being "abusive of my friends" because I was reluctant to OC with them after multiple requests to draw this one thing they wanted, especially because I was incredibly short on time and I had to be judicious about how I was spending my free moments.
Excuses aside, there's just something that happens between fans and creators that makes otherwise smart and socially adept people become total mongoloids.

Wow...I actually had this happen to me about four months ago.
I had a dear friend, he would make suggestions of what I should draw, and that was how we operated for a bit. Then I started to change my art, going for a more realistic look, which he didn't like. Started out subtle, he didn't suggest as much art, and he wouldn't say more than "oh, looks okay" when I showed him what I worked on. And then out of the blue he started on about how I was liar about the direction of my art, and that I was changing too suddenly for him and he couldn't adapt.
It was weird, and sad, because we hardly even talk anymore.

This happened to me about this time last year. I was told by someone formerly close to me they liked it when I did "this and this" better than what I was doing at this time last year. However, I think the reason why they really said that was because at this time last year, I was experiencing a sudden surge in popularity at the same time. Funny, the reasons why people bitch about things like this.
And once again I'm happy I go under the radar! No phony "friends-for-art" so far.
It's odd how a lot of people seem to think that an artist they (once) like(d) has some sort of duty to keep them happy. Of course I don't think it's wrong to, for instance, say your mind on someone's change in style - but to act like you have a right to dictate it is different. And to expect an (unpayed) artist to cater to your desires is to lack perspective, big time.

Oh boy, just got in a fight with a troll over this, who actually demanded that I take something down form my gallery, lol. Too many people think you must cater specifically to them. If someone doesn't like a piece of art, they can go find another piece of art or another artist.
True? Yeah, right. Call me a psycho, but I'd rather burn the books I'm currently reading than accept any kind of real-life payment for art. Why does nobody think of the other side of the coin? Well, everyone moans about having to pay for stuff, just to milk the cash out of people themselves. I've read so many rude replies to art requests that I cannot pretend to see any specific purpose in such an unfriendly cartoon. 'No, sorry. I don't do requests.' should be enough, but no, one forgets about any rule of political correctness, as the internet is not a place to behave like we are tought to do. Frankly, it is sad.
Exactly what a lot of people have come to me with. When my friends recommend something I draw, I shove it off into the corner of my brain until I can't think of anything myself. When random people tell me to draw things, I just say, "Yeah, right. Ain't happening unless you send me some of that green stuff." XD
At least I pay for mines, AND I don't mind the changes artists make with their art. If its a long time artist working in a different direction, I'm not going to argue with that since I would like to see how well these artists keep going to improve. And believe me, it's pretty cool once you do see it.
hahah i just found this by accident and love it! I'm a what you call a critic most of the time but i never impose my will on others it just ain't me. sides if i don't like your stuff i just don't fav it but i will still watch you because you may draw something i like later. heh when it comes to requests i actually tell the artist my character specs and let them come up with something unless i wanted to be specific about an idea :P I also tell them no rush take your time and good thing to. most artists i ask take forever but meh i don't care i'm not some whiny 12 yo that bawwws when his 'free art' ain't getting done in time
