Correct me if I'm wrong but doesnt the # hashtag nonsense come from sites like twitter using it as a way to turn text in to a search engine accessible "phrase" like if you add the # on twitter I think it becomes a clickable link to search for other people who have said the same thing.

Now if I'm right, that explains its use on sites like that but everywhere else? yeah worthless and dumb hehe
