AELYNN open species created by Malena Mordekai Transphinx
The Aelynn have a society focused on concept of OBSERVATION. They know that whatever your observe is affected by the observation, and the Aelynn also know very well that observing can change the observer as well.
To always observe more, the Aelynns have a nomad civilization. In some regions they suffer discrimation and can even be forced into guettos. In others, they are a prized people for their special skills. Sometimes both extremes apply, such as when they are used as spies on xenophobic lands.
Individual expression is a paramount value for Aelynn, but outsiders are baffled of how often Aelynn's settlements can restrict freedom of thought and speech. This isn't considered a paradox by the Aelynn themselves. Sometimes they even go to the point of separating into castes when they are particularly numerous. It's common that philosophical factions and commercial guilds give rise to castes when that happens. Aelynn castes have some traits of appearence in common, and which would be these is subject to strange customs that affect not only clothing but their biological outlook.
Canon Appearance: Most look like some kind of predatory mammal, and the most common ones they resemble are felines and canines.
Their fur have vivid, almost unnatural colors, usually its base showing a degrade between two tones. It isn't uncommon to show markings over such base, spots mainly.
The ears of the Aelynn are regardless always pointed and look like gauged, though the piercing is actually an organic, chitinous extrusion. Their bones are coated in that kind of chitinous wrapping.
Aelynn legs can look feline or canine for sure but much more common are creepy rodent-like legs; in rare cases the chitinous extrusions replace the legs of an individual, and this can happen when the Aelynn hits puberty. The tails follow that same logic, except the more common tails look like those of scorpions.
The eyes use to have weird colors and effects and are basically idiosyncratic and individual. Even relatives can have wildly different colors and shapes on the eyes and this is said to be revealing of a given Aelyinn's personality. It's common but not mandatory that the eyes' color and the nose's are similar if not identical.
Some Aelynn have antennae, crab-like or insect-like. Others have partial cover of scaly plates, made of their peculiar chitin. Some have a type of beak formed from that material, like an octopus would. Some display sabertooth.
All of this can change as the Aelynn ages, and certain age thresholds are more common to trigger alterations, like 7 years of age, 13 to 19 (puberty), 23 (young adult, when the brain is fully settled), 33, 49 and 101 years of age. After this age some Aelynn can survive centuries thanks to their peculiar powers. But most die way before.
Also, see below for transformation powers and the Polter for how they can affect an Aelynn's seeming.
Powers: Aelynn have usually one or two sets of powers and in case a character have both, they are actually interlinked: perception powers and transformation powers.

In addition to that, weird effects not controlable by the Aelynn can happen sometimes, and they call those "polter". The Polter can make an Aelynn look like cursed or haunted in some cases. Sometimes Polter can be predicatable and operate on base of triggers. Other times it seems random. At worst it appears to be sentient...
