Well, we've invented many prototype flying cars that still have to use the usual airplane runway model and carefully controlled airspace, which still makes them very impractical. The real problem isn't just inventing the hover technology, it's the many other drawbacks. A ground car collision is bad enough, but a jetcar mid-air collision? That would almost certainly result in fatalities and additional property damage when cars plummet to the ground. Not to mention we'd have to regulate air traffic just as seen in BTTF2. Teleportation, now that would be more impressive.

I want a flying T-Bird. :)
