This is a bit of art for the lovely
tomek1000, of his dragon reimagined as a nightfury from How to Train Your Dragon. I'm really, really proud of how this one turned out!

I agree with you, that mind control... this thing is just terrible, for me it was even horror... just awful. I hate this thing the most in the second movie... And this new dragon "hierarchy". I will never watch this movie again because of it and because of few other reasons too.
And fun fact, the HTTYD TV series has given me much more pleasant experiences, emotions and feelings than this "HTTYD2". It is wonderful addition to the HTTYD movie which does not remake its fundamentals.

I definitely agree. Riders/Defenders of Berk (while occasionally having some iffy episodes) was much more enjoyable and fun.
The thing that really strikes me about that hierarchy is something said in the first movie. Astrid is intent on warning everyone about the dragon nest and she says "No, no, it makes total sense! They're the workers and that's their queen! It controls them!"
Now, we're clearly supposed to take this as a ridiculous notion; Astrid - in character - is simply jumping to conclusions and devaluing the dragons' individuality and intelligence. It's made perfectly clear that the alpha in the first movie rules through brute force and fear. Not only that, but when Toothless battles him, it would have been an EASY matter for him to just BOOM mind control him and be done.
But for some IDIOTIC reason, they took Astrid's assumption and rolled with it even though it TOTALLY devalues the dragons' intelligence, makes NO sense whatsoever, and devalues them as characters.

Yeah, I liked almost every episode. The most epic episodes for me are 10 and 11 episodes of Defenders of Berk (with the Skrill). And I love the Skrill! It is one of my favourite HTTYD dragons (second to the Night Fury).

Yes, I always thought so for 4 years. Even in the "The Art of How To Train Your Dragon" artbook is nothing written about mind control:

And I always thought that Astrid just made an assumption.

THIS. Totally this. They sacrificed the dragons' freedom and their intelligence just in order to show how Toothless will overcome this newly-born mind control - to show the power of friendship with Hiccup...
They could made just a new challenges to show the power of their friendship, but without devaluing the dragons' intelligence and losing their freedom (I mean if you are a dragon and you just fly past the battle with the Bewilderbeasts, you will find yourself embroiled in it under the mind control, whether you want to or not.) By the way, these Bewilderbeasts have an ugly design, for me they are more like mammoth-like creatures than dragons.
While in HTTYD 1 movie and the TV series the dragons are portrayed as quite sentient creatures overall, they just can't speak, but it seems that they can understand viking speech (especially Toothless).
Actually, they sacrificed many things in HTTYD 2 in order to show something... Hiccup now is not the first who befriended with dragon, it is Valka, which is the super-puper dragon trainer, who can defeat the Night Fury with one hand and who can befriend with the Night Fury almost instantly, while Hiccup was working so hard to gain the Toothless's trust.
And they sacrificed the organic Toothless's design, they spoiled it with these weird moving double spikes and glowing. Especially with glowing, it just does not match with the Night Fury's nature as nocturnal stealth dragon-bomber. Now the Toothless's design is not so organic as it was before. And this Toothless's super mode is the simpliest thing that can be done to defeat the enemy. Just give to the character a hidden super ability which was just not active before, and your character will win just standing on the ground and shooting fireballs... While the battle with the Red Death in the first movie was really a battle, where Hiccup's ingenuity and Night Fury's natural agility, stealth and power all combined helped to win.
Regarding moving double spikes, the fact that Toothless didn't knew that he can move them also bugs me. How can he not know the capabilities of his own body?.. it also shows him not in the best light... And how Hiccup did not find it for 5 years? Clearly it was made just to show how much Valka knows about dragons. And I do not think that these spikes really helping make turns.
In HTTYD 2 they destroyed almost everything that I loved the most in HTTYD 1. For me the best part of the second movie is the first 5 minutes of the movie. :3
(sorry for my english)
