Part 1 of 3 (Original on Syhn's page here: https://www.furaffinity.net/view/12432736/ )
(The fun paw stuff begins in Part 2 ;3 )
Star sat on a rusty metal bench, doubled over, his face in his hands. The orange feline squeezed his eyes shut, and let out a long and pained sigh. “Fuck..” He sniffled out, running both paws through his hair. “This is going to be a disaster..” He mumbled, his hands trailing down to his neck. His fingers firmly gripped a large plastic collar upon his neck, which emitted a soft beep as it was touched. Star was marked, and there was no escaping now. Any hope of somehow eluding the government was crushed, with the implementation of the tracking collars.
“How on -earth- am I going to tell him..? I can’t do anything to protect myself, if he..” Star trailed off, shaking his head. Things were bad enough, without him thinking pessimistic thoughts. It would be better to just confidently tell his roommate what he truly was. If he didn’t show weakness or insecurity, perhaps the wolf would leave him alone about it. That had to work. Right?
The feline sighed and idly rubbed a thumb against his ring finger, rubbing at the small cloaker that wrapped around it. Such a small thing, yet it had completely changed the way micros were viewed in society. They were minor threats before, but now, they were nearly on equal terms with the ‘norms’. As a result, though, greater precautions were taken, in order to ensure their compliance. One such measure, was Registration. It was designed to collar and track every micro, in order to clearly distinguish them from the norm population.
Star idly thumbed at his collar again, and sighed. He sluggishly got up to his feet and began to make his way back on campus, feeling quite self conscious about his latest accessory.
...
Jason hummed quietly, laying upon his pale green bed. It was a small bed, designed for cramming into a dormitory. Despite its size, it served the wolf well. He spent many nights laying upon it, with a book in his hands. Tonight, was one such night.
“Mm. Wonder went Star went..” Jason murmured, delicately turning a page of his book. His eyes slowly scanned the small text, while his mind created a luscious landscape of green trees, vibrant purple and gold flowers, and calm streams.
‘A small band of foxes made their way across the valley. They laughed merrily and skipped through the green pasture. Occasionally, one would stoop down and pluck up a purple flower, and bring it to his nose, t-’
The dormitory door slowly creaked open. Jason flicked an ear curiously, turning his head in the direction of the door. “Star?” He called out, slowly shifting into a sitting position on his bed. The lupine watched as the door gradually swung inwards, and there, standing in the middle of the hallway, was Star. A large collar was on the cat’s neck.
“A-ah.. Hey Jason. What’s up?” Star smiled weakly, trying his best to seem nonchalant. He knew that Jason was probably shocked at the discovery that his best friend was a micro, and knew that a barrage of questions would soon follow. The orange kitty, in another attempt to show that he was not at all intimidated, casually strolled in and went to the kitchen.
Jason sat wide-eyed, ears perked high up. Heck, even his jaw had dropped a bit! “Uh.. Nothing much..” The wolf stammered out. His eyes were glued to the back of Star’s head, as the cat dug around in the fridge for something to eat. Slowly, a grin spread along the wolf’s face as he realized what this was. “Oh, c’mon dude, nice try. I almost believed you for a second, there!” He laughed out, exhaling out of relief. Obviously, Star was simply playing a joke on him, like he had done so many times before. “Halloween isn’t for another month, Star. I didn’t know you were trying out your costume early!”
Star felt both relieved and terrified. He smiled weakly, as he turned around and leaned against the counter. “R-right, heh. Well.. It doesn’t hurt to get it early, y’know? I bet these’ll be sold out by the time we reach Halloween.” The orange feline stretched, and rubbed at his eyes. “Well, Jason, I’d love to stay and chat, but I think I should hit the hay.”
Jason frowned and tilted his head. “It’s only seven o’ clock! And ‘sides, you promised to help me practice for wrestling! You’re not getting outta this so easily.” The wolf joked, grinning from ear to ear. He hopped up from his reclining position, and made his way over to the opposite side of the counter, setting his hands atop of the cat’s own. He grinned, leaning forward in a mock menacing pose. “Besides, you can’t do anything about it. You’re just a little micro.”
Star swallowed audibly, painfully aware of the fact that he was indeed a helpless micro. Granted, Jason wasn’t actually aware that the playful teasing wasn’t coming off as such, to his feline friend. In fact, Star was very uncomfortable. His cheeks were heating up rapidly, in a humiliated blush. “I-I’m not...” The cat muttered under his breath, staring down at the wolf’s hands. “Just let me go sleep already, Jason.”
“No chance, little micro. Now that I caught ya, you’re my little slave!” Jason grinned, leaning in and pressing his nose to the cat’s nose. “I think it’s time we bring you down to your natural height.” He cleared his throat, and slid both hands over Star’s left hand. He lifted it up to where both of them could get a good glimpse, and he slipped the cloaker right off. Star instantly vanished, and Jason stumbled backwards. “Gah! W-what the hell..?!” He yelped out, utterly confused at the disappearance of his friend. Jason turned his hand, palm-up, and gazed at the delicate silver ring that remained; the only reminder of Star. It took him long enough, but, it finally dawned on the wolf that Star was in fact, a micro. He felt surprised, and a -tad- annoyed. Surely, he was trustworthy enough to keep that secret. He could’ve easily protected Star, had that been the case.
While Jason mulled over his thoughts, Star slowly sat up and rubbed his temples with his hands. It had been -months- since he last took his ring off, so, the shock of returning to his natural height was to be expected. Granted, now he had another issue on his hands; deciding whether to run to Jason, or to escape.
“Staaaar? Buddy? Are you alright..?” Jason called up from above, cautiously winding his way around the counter. He stepped onto the cool tile of the kitchen floor, and his padded feet produced a soft slap, as warm flesh met with hard tile. “Star, where’d you go? I promise I won’t hurt you. Look, I’ll even let you come to me, when you’re ready.”
Star sighed shakily, and slowly padded out of the kitchen. Granted, it took him at least a minute of slow walking, but he finally reached the border where the polished linoleum floor turned into fuzzy beige rug. Here, the little cat stood out like a sore thumb. Surely enough, Jason saw him.
“Oh, there you are, buddy.” Jason whispered out. Slowly, cautiously, he crouched down. The wolf made sure not to make any sudden jerky movements. He deposited the ring he had accidentally taken, and left it right before Star. As the cat approached the ring, it seemed to vanish from sight! A couple of seconds later, a grown Star re-appeared. He wore a worried look, and eyed the wolf nervously.
“Star, I didn’t..” Jason began, but the cat waved a hand in the air, and sighed heavily. “No, no.. I should’ve told you about this, when I walked in. I was going to, really.. But it seemed so much easier to just forget about it, and pretend it was just a costume. I guess it was silly of me to think that things could remain unchanged, after all this Registration bull-shit.” Star leaned back against the marble counter, and sighed.
“I’ll admit.. It feels kinda.. Odd, I guess. My best friend and roommate turning out to be a micro, and all of that.” Jason scratched his head, staring down at the floor. “But Star, no matter what, I promise that I’ll always treat you as an equal. I still see you as the same cat I’ve come to know and love.” Jason smiled, reaching out and gently rubbing between Star’s ears, drawing a soft purr from the feline.
Star grinned weakly, and nudged the wolf. “You’re pretty sappy.” He gently teased, before clearing his throat and continuing. “But seriously, Jason. Thank you for everything. It means a lot to me.” The cat purred out, nuzzling affectionately into Jason’s hand.
“Anytime, Star.” Jason chuckled out, patting the cat’s head again. “So, uh.. Want me to walk you to class? I can imagine that having that collar on makes you an easy target.” He frowned slightly, tapping a finger against the thick plastic collar.
“Forward, escort!” Star giggled out, pointing at the door. Jason grinned and rolled his eyes, making his way over to the door, and holding it open for Star. The cat strolled past, and flicked his tail at the wolf. “To the science building!” The cat announced once more.
“Yes, -sir-.” The wolf chuckled out, trailing after Star. It had only been an hour since his best friend’s secret had been revealed. Most furs would still be in shock, but not Jason. He felt strangely.. Okay with this. He felt more protective of the ‘little’ guy, now that his secret was out. Still, Jason’s mind couldn’t help but wander to some of the more ‘adult’ scenarios he’d read between micros and norms. A couple of his friends had mentioned something about little tongues working wonders on achy feet. Maybe once Star was comfortable with being small around him, Jason would be able to test that theory. He was certain the cat would have no qualms with -that-.
