Ah yes, but that was not a velociraptor and is in fact it's own distinct genus. The ones in the films are called velociraptors by name and those never got bigger than a dog and also weren't as inteligent as their larger raptor cousins. The ones in the films were really just deinonychus' by a different name. Not just based on the size but the skull shape as well. The film makers even admit modeling their raptors in size and shape after deinonychus. The lack of feathers of course is explicable due to the film's age and the fact aviosaurs as a scientific reality (I don't think) really caught on yet. Hence why they added some slight plumage in JP III. As far as I know, they stuck with the name velociraptor because it sounds cooler and is easier to pronounce than deinonychus . Any way, all my nerdy rambling aside, I LOVE their design as previously stated and this art is ALL kinds of badass!~ Cheers fellow dino lover!~ ^v^
They're velociraptor in the films because they were velociraptors in the books.
They were velociraptor in the books because Crichton always wanted to be on the bleeding edge of science, and when he was writing JP there was a small movement to rename Deinonychus Antirrhopus to Velociraptor Antirrhopus, making them a different breed but the same species as velociraptor.
This was shot down pretty quickly in the paleontological world, but it's caused a lot of confusion ever since among the masses.
Utahraptor was way bigger than the raptors in the movie, I'm really not sure why Deinonychus isn't pointed to more frequently.
