Abandoned "squirrel cage" type ventilation fan for a bituminous coal mine. I can't recall, but probably about 75 to 100hp motor. These were once all over the place in this area, as many miles of underground tunnels honeycombed the coal fields. This was right next to a busy road, so no need to tramp in the snow :) but it may be gone now.
Bituminous mines are bad for methane and carbon monoxide and dust are always a problem. Adequate ventilation was (and is) one of the biggest challenges to coal mining.
I'm sure this was once in a building, somewhat like this:

Oh it definitely happens! Not so much a problem out in the country, but around Pittsburgh mine subsidence is a regular thing, damaging roads and sometimes houses.
Actually in modern "long wall" mining, the intention is to drop the entire landscape by quite a few feet. Obviously, houses and roads cannot be above during the mining process :)
