A few years back I was working up some character designs for a female otter character and I suddenly realized that I did not have a very good understanding of what otters were like. Library trip! These were some reference sketches I did from sources I was able to find at the public library. If it has not already left I'd love to go to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and see their otter exhibit that opened this year and do live drawing of them.

That would be Margaret River, the US Coast Guard rescue diver? She’s the only otter character of yours I can recall. You should do more with her.
By the way, I’ve always wondered what the otter in the lower right corner is tearing at. The sketch is sufficiently sketchy that it’s unidentifiable.

Very cool stuff. On the cross-country run here, we stopped at Chicago, and went to the aquarium.
Where a single otter was in an enclosure, dunno where the rest were, mebbe check ups, or something.
But he/she saw us through the glass, and immediately began to frisk around, running at the water, diving in, looking at us through the glass, then kicking off it to repeat the process.

In the interests of ottering, I should note that even if Monterey Bay doesn't still have them (and I think they have a permanent exhibit at this point?), you can go up the road a few dozen miles to the Elkhorn Slough, take a walk or a short kayak trip, and watch the sea otters in the wild. Very, verrrrrry different experience, but well worth the while in its own right.
