Open die forging with steam hammers in Chicago, 2005. Other than the forklift manipulator, these guys are doing a job largely unchanged for 100 years. Forging heated steel into shapes for useful things like shafts, valve bodies, gear blanks, etc.
This work requires a lot of skill. Naturally it will all be gone soon, mostly replaced by computers and robots or sent overseas, because we wouldn't want anyone here to have to think much or learn any skills they might have to be compensated for.
